A buddy of his mentioned at the ableton forum that Psy produces himself using Logic and Pro Tools and that his philosophy is it really doesn't matter what you use.
Not sure what Gangnam Style has to do with his production choices. Psy is about much more than his latest hit song and the character he plays in the music video.
("Gagnam Style music production" is not supposed to be taken seriously, sorry if taken otherwise)
Hey you guys this Gangnam Style has hit the radio in the US and over 15 countries! Mad props to this guy. It is now sit in #11 in the billboard with over 200,000 million views in just 2 months. That's pretty awesome.
You guys are really late on this, even the guardian was on board the k-pop train a year ago which means every pretty-well-to-do middle class Tom, Dick and Harry are rocking it gangnam style
There's a screaming synth sound sound in this track I love. It's layered in with the porto perfectly. The benni banassi sounding intro filter sounds a beat cheap but the other synths are nice...
I've just finished a 3 hour arguement with another producer friend (who likes LMFAO) but hates on this. After plenty of a/b ing, this is clearly way more better produced and mixed than any LMFAO track. This thing is crystal and clean. Listening to LMFAO, it sounds like they've deliberately over saturated and maxamized things, probably to hide the studio unrealness. Lots of distortion all over the place, have a listen, it's true.
It's so easy to hate on this record but I love it!!! Well Done!!!
I was detecting the original post as a joke but I don't care.
I'd be willing to bet its made all In the box. With a talented brain one can get quite a sound out of VSTs. I remember someone posting about lady gaga's last album and what analog synths the producer used on the album. Turned out the guy made the whole thing in logic!
Such a strange comment. Those of us who produce EDM for a living have been making things ITB for years - weird how people think it's weird that we do. Lady GaGa - completely possible without a single outboard instrument.
Ì am one bitter snobby bastard when it comes to music, and it only gets worse the older i get; but this song/video makes me smile. Extra bonus that you for once get to take part in something todays kids are into.

It was a serious joke. I would love to know what sort of synths are used for this stuff, whether they are vintage analog or the ones that ship with Logic.

This is gearslutz, we don't joke around here......!
This is now all over media, it's being called the Macarena of 2012. Even kids are dancing to it and teachers use it to bribe class to sit still during lecture, ie. they get to see Gangnam Style video if they concentrate in the classroom..
Well, it's nice to see that the songs that eventually make really BIG regardless of nationality and age are somewhat fun and not grim and gloomy stuff.
Slowly Music market is becoming global, in ten years charts will have music of all over the world.
And it will all sound the same...
I mean, this video is fun - but apart from the lyrics the music could just as well have been produced in the US or Europe - or Australia or South Africa. Possibly even somewhere in Latin America or Israel.
The McD world of music. Everybody in the whole world listens to the same shitty pop. Oh glorious future, here we come
Hey I am not remotely ashamed to say I enjoyed that. More impressive than the music is the work that went into making that video. All in good fun!
As to Sean's question, if I had to guess I would say this was done with softsynths and the one that immediately came to mind was Nexus 2. There are a ton of patches that sound exactly like they could have fit right in that song.
The hardware that came to mind was a Virus TI2 but I still vote for Nexus 2.

That must be why I liked it... I have both...
I'd of loved to of produced and mixed this track... I wouldn't of been ashamed. I'm still a million miles away from getting my sounds to sit like this in the mix.
I'm sick of people hating on thing JUST because they're popular.
You know how much harder it is to make something that a HUGE amount of people like than to make something so avantgarde that most people can't understand the emotion behind the piece??
ART, MUSIC, whatever, is about making people feel something, this song makes people happy and feel good, dance, so MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
I listen to people like Dr. Luke, this man is an amazing producer, his sounds always sound polished, perfect, I mean he's a great great musician who could murder me with his jazz chops on guitar ANYDAY.
HE, instead chose a different route. Is he EVIL for it??
So eff stop hating, it's NOT a BAD song...
I'd rather hear me some Simian Mobile Disco over this ANYDAY, but it's not bad, it's definitely NOT "bad".
some incredible mixing going on here -- don't you agree? stop talking about the song, this mixing is definitely 100% on point. wish i could mix dance like this...

I don't hear anything special mixing-wise, sounds like fairly typical electro-house to me. Without the silly video it would have like 700 plays on youtube.
IMO of course.

Means south of the river.
One or even 3 districts south of the river in South Korean capitol Seoul.
From Wiki
"Gangnam or Gangnam three Districts is the area of three "gu" (local government wards) in Seoul, South Korea, individually known as Gangnam-gu, Seocho-gu and Songpa-gu and often collectively referred to as "Gangnam". Gangnam is strictly a Sino-Korean place name meaning "south of the river".
These districts are known for their expensive real estate. Media reports frequently refer to this area when they cover stories about real estate. The area has been developed very quickly in an organized way since 1970s by the government and is now home to many companies and a target of real estate investors. Residents of this area are regarded as very affluent by Koreans."
