Drum synths/samplers with best "preset sounds"

I know "best" is always subjective, but ..

Been looking for a drum synth with good presets. My main interest is in the presets and maybe tweakability of the presets. Sample import, loop chopping, hardware integration are not so important.

I've used a lot of Dimension Pro + all the E-MU expansions (PX-7, Planet Earth, mo'phatt), but since they don't work with latest OS X, I'm gonna have to look elsewhere (shame on you Cakewalk, I'm not happy at all!).

I've looked at Motu BPM, Geist, Battery, Stylus so far, but I'm not really drawn to any of those. BPM is the most intriguing so far, but since there's no possibility to demo, I'm not that convinced yet and open for other ideas? I'm also not that keen on buying separate sample packs, would be great to just have one install and go on.

So you essentially want great samples, but you're against buying them separately from the plugin itself?

Good luck with that...

Well, you could say I need a decent "bread and butter" drum synth, but I wouldn't ofcourse mind if it had good editing capabilities.

I've got bad experience in trying to use separately bought samples. It takes time to find samples then there's the trouble of creating custom banks and after that in my experience the links to samples are lost easily. (I've tried old Battery and Logic's Ultrabeat, it could never keep links to the samples I imported.)

It takes time to find samples period. And sample management is indeed work... I mean, if you're reluctant to buy samples that don't include a plugin, then hey, that's your prerogative.

I can't help you unfortunately, because I've yet to buy a sampler on the basis of its included sounds. And I've yet to buy a sampler whose included sounds I'm particularly fond of...

I'm not the kind of guy who goes thru thousands of samples on HD/samplesite to find a perfect hat or snare, I rather process a well made bread and butter preset. Even back in the day I used to prefer a drum bank on my Korg Trinity/Triton over a custom made set on my Yamaha A-series sampler, I did those too, but I guess it's not my way of working. Ie. I prefer "instruments", not individual samples.

Even now I often use an Korg M1 legacy drum bank to start with, they're still good, but I was hoping to upgrade a bit from there.

Big problem is that none of the samplers I've tried have kept the links to samples, if they actually did that I might go that route (just figured the Dimension Pro expansion kits are actually WAV's).

You're absolutely entitled. Everyone works differently. I personally don't go through thousands of samples either. And I don't necessarily build kits, as it were, with the intent to reuse them; I choose samples for the particular track (usually a dozen or less), load them up, and save (using the sampler's facilities) them alongside the project.

That's a problem with your samplers bro, not the philosophy itself (acquiring samples separate from the sampler). I've used Battery before, and I never had a problem with it not relinking samples, so I'm curious about that. The only sampler that ever gave me real headaches was pHATmatik Pro, and that was halfway my fault for having the wrong approach to sample management.
