Live setups

Lately i've been playing around with some live experimentation. I've noticed after listening to sets i've done that you can either dj really good music (completely finished tracks) or you can play/perform okay music.
Just wondering what setups you use and what you actually do live when performing or if you've found it just sounds better to dj the tracks already finished.

Why not perform/play good music? I try not to recreate my studio tracks on stage exactly. Give the live set its own life and feel.

My previous band NOiSEA was a trip hop act with live band and pre recorded material. The drumer was on click and synchronized video arts was projecting.I had 2 laptops running softsynths calibrated specially for separate songs with different patches and key splitts. The singers had effect automations running through the DAW using the interface preamps and routing.
One day i dropped all this shits and made a rock n roll band and feeling way better!

Are you playing live to sound good or to enjoy yourself?

I like improvising live and never sounding the same way twice. If I was just DJing my tracks Id feel like playing "live" was utterly pointless and a bit of a lie to be honest.

this is why i own an MPC 2000XL, everything is at hand and real time arrangement is fun for everyone. just make sure you label tracks and sequences so you can understand them at 4am in dim light

I guess it depends on what you do live. Djing is a proven way of playing stuff 'live' but if you don't feel involved in the music enough maybe you need to work out your own way of doing things.
