Bought one earlier this week and I really like it. Granted, perhaps vintage gear will sound even more alive but for me this is a great compromise. Not too expensive, new (warranty etc.), analog, punchy and lush sounding.

You already have a Poly Evolver, Virus, JX-8P, Moog LP, Roland SH-101 and more... (a-hem) You're asking what exactly?

Indeed that"s why I need some help; but these days, there are a lot of choices on new synths and good ones!

Having already a PER and a mopho, I'm not interested by the Prophet08 which is quite redundant; besides, their sound is a little too harsh and dry and lacks of low-mids;

For mono, you have SEM Pro and Telemark. Those 2 reminds me of 80's synths with modern amenities.

Does it need a keyboard or can it be a rack? Poly or mono?
SE ATC1-X or SE1-X or Boomstar with plenty of change.

HAve you checked out the MOOG LITTLE PHATTY? This is in your budget and is one serious synth! In fact this was the last project Bob Moog worked on before passing away. There indeed are a lot of great synths out there, I see them daily.....this one, I think you will most definitely fall in love with. I have, and I am incredibly hard to please. LOL

Telemark, ATC1, SEM seem good options and are in my budget.

Moog RME (new) is too expensive and Little Phatty, I know it very well.

a few hours again to make my decision

It can be rack, desktop, mono, duo, poly but, please, with more than one oscillator as I will do detuning...

Oh man, it doesn't seems you need another analog synth, but what the heck..

SEM all the way!

Still, if I were you, I'd go for a something different: Kurzweil K2661. Not so old (few years max) and no compromise sound quality.

I kind of thought he just meant new as in new for him, but yeah if he needs it to be brand new that wouldn't work. That being said, there are a few mint for $1700 on ebay, and maybe OP might want to think about the cost : value ratio a bit more.. At $1500 you could get a nice synth. The new DSI poly maybe? That thing looks pretty sweet. In the back of your mind you know for $200 bucks more you could have a voyager... mm that would be hard to stomach for me.

I don't want to spend an arm on it; it's just for getting these old synth sounds you can hear on John Carpenter's tracks eg ( escape from NY ).

The only thing that will give you John Carpenter-type sounds at exactly that budget is the Prophet 600.

Tom Oberheim SEM Pro for something brand new. It has the vintage tone but it is a mono synth. Carpenter used SCI Prophets. I'm sure there is a Prophet 5 out there, somewhere, for $1500, but good luck finding it and being in working order.

Minibrute + Korg Polysix would make a nice pair for approximately 1500$.

Very cool. I've never heard the perfourmer. Has very nice tone. It definitely captures that John Carpenter sound you were looking for.

If I had that money to spend on a synth, I would probably save up a little more (or sell one of my synths) and get The Helmtronic Challenger.

I really like the look of the telemark keyboard version. Not sure if that puts you over budget though? I have the sem patch panel which is great but I really like synths with keyboards. Less patching etc. And all the telemark demoes I've heard are great.

Haven't heard one myself but peep's are going a bit mental over the mini brute. So I'm sure there is a good sound behind all the hype.

It's still somewhat ironic to me that Arturia spent the best part of a decade emulating analogue synths only to end of manufacturing one!!

Obviously the se1 or boom star if it materialises ( and sounds good?)

There are obviously a ton of options in the mono department.

Expander is my next synth purchase. Still relatively cheap. But vintage and over budget (but only just over budget!)

Obviously an andromeda if you don't already have one? But they are definitely over your budget.

Question is. Once you've detuned the oscillators. Then what?
