Is a Korg EMX right for me?

Hardware Midi step sequencing - yes

Can notes be specific lengths per hit?

Can notes be different midi channel per hit?

Can have pattern of different step length/adjustable for roll? (eg 1-32 steps?)

How many midi drum 'notes' per pattern?

Can pattern run at different rates (eg 1/4 steps)

Any other funky pluses for controlling other drum samplers?

TIA

You can adjust pattern lengths but only by divisions of 2, as in 16, 32, 48, 64. However you can change the scaling.

Only down side about it is that I don't want to use any on board sounds or the tubes in it... it would all be extra weight...

If you set multiple parts to the same midi channel, you can. But each part is monophonic.

I've got one, and love it, but honestly of you're only going to use it as a sequencer it's a waste of money, and there are probably better alternatives out there in the same price range.

Such as? I wouldn't mind getting a unit that could also output decent bassline/drum pattern, such as Roland or such..

If it's mainly for sequencing, have you considered a Yamaha QY700?

I was seeing a EM1, which was quite a bit cheaper. Can it work well for midi sequencing?

The main thing I'm interested in that I can easily change the note of outgoing patterns via midi.

Basically I like to quickly plug in a rhythm or try different sounds out quickly.

Yes - but it has only 64 steps per pattern (as opposed to the EMX/ESX 128 steps) and all parts (for any Electribe) are mono. I also don't think there is any way to alter velocity/pitch bend/aftertouch, etc when sequencing external stuff...
