JD800 Reliability

Seldom do I see one of these come up for sale, and each time one the price also seems to rise. I'm curious if there are any owners who can comment on long-term reliability of this instrument. What things should one look out for with this synth? How well do the sliders hold up after being used a long time?

Also curious what most users would consider a reasonable price for a JD990? I'm not personally interested (I've heard it's a better synthesizer than the JD800, although it doesn't hsve the Star Trek front panel of the JD800) but there's one down under for $600.

The main problem with the JD800 is the keybed.

They made a huge design cock-up by using some ridiculous low melt point red glue that holds in the weights inside the indiviadual keys. This, after time, in a hotish climate (even in UK ) melts and drips all over the damping stripe and contact rail. The keys become sticky and its a nightmare to play.

It can be cleaned up though. Roland JD-800 sticky keys service / repair

The sliders can get dusty, causing parameters to go crazy, adjusting themselves, but sometimes a good hoover and rapid 'back & forth' movement can get them back to normal.

JD990 usually goes for 400 - 500 EUR over here. So 600$ would be a little bit above average, but still acceptable I'd say. Don't know how often they turn up in Oz though.

Mine is still working great. No sign of the red glue melting ...yet. The JD-800 has a diagnostics routine to check the sliders and switches are working over their full range which is useful.

uk ebay:

JD-800 £300 - £500 (the latter usually involving shill bidders - usually top out at £450)
JD-990 £350 - £550 (they often have a bidding war as the rack is very desirable, to some)
