TR-909 with Richie Hawtin Autograph

Hey All,

I have a question. I have a Roland TR-909 in very good condition that has Richie Hawtin's autograph on it. It's on the front plate in pretty big black magic marker. I'll post a pic if someone wants to see.

I bought the unit off of eBay about 6 or 7 years ago. The autograph was on it when I bought it.

Anywho, it's all original (other than the autograph).

I was wondering what you think the "value" is on this thing? I see units on eBay going for $1,500-2,500. Does the autograph add any value? I know that is hard to answer. I guess it depends on whether or not a buyer likes/loves Hawtin.

Thanks,
Matt B NYC

Find out his autograph goes for, then add that to the typical price of the 909.

(a collector might buy it, but a real musician will probably think it's just ink marking up their instrument... depends)

Can you verify that its really Richie Hawtin's Autograph? I mean seriously man anybody could whip out a magic marker and scrawl Richie Hawtin on a TB303 or 909 and boom claim big money for it.

I would seriously think that if it can't be verified it would not add any value whatsoever.

I've seen other Hawtin signed 909s for sale before... Is this just one he rented for a gig for a couple hours or one he used in his studio to make tracks with?

I sold my 909 a few weeks ago, it had Jeff Mills autograph he did in front of me after playing with it at a show we setup in my hometown. I knew it was original.
I didn’t even bother to add it in the description on the auction, the pic was enough.
Starting price was 1200 swiss francs, it went up to 1920 swiss francs, (I paid it 1800 17 years ago) so I guess you’ll be able to cash in pretty good money for it regardless of the signature!

909s are already very expensive as it is, i doubt anyone would fork out even more then the going street price for a signed unit (not to mention its going to be hard for you to prove it's authenticity) but who knows. fwiw this 303 has been on ebay for over a year: ROLAND TB-303 BAM BAM & MARSHALL JEFFERSON | eBay

Post a picture, I'll tell you if it's real.

And it isn't from his studio.

People pay a premium for a Hawtin signed 909?

j/k

Decks efx 909 is a cool mix and I understand that connected him to the 909. I have some bootlegs mixes (somewhere) where he used much more 909 alone in his set. I have a Hawtin mixed tape (from maybe 1994/95) that I bought at a rave back in the day. Maybe someone will pay me thousands for it one day

A buddy of mine had a 909 signed by a bunch of "thee" Detroit artists plus Hawtin. It was covered with autographs. I don't think he has it anymore.

I personally would rather have a 909 signed by Tadao Kikumoto.

Him, and don't forget Roland's Matsuoka and Nakamura (CR-78 and TR-808). They also deserve major recognition for contributions to modern music. Where would we be without programmable beat machines? We would all be playing along to the Waltz and Bossa Nova.

The value of the autograph will be subjective depending on the buyer. The autograph adds value to someone who is a fan of Ritchie Hawtin, but not to someone who doesn't care much about him. So it is a matter of finding the right buyer.

the best part is the description: People tell me this 303 is priceless if this is true, then that means I'm giving this thing away !

I believe the Marshall Jefferson / Bam Bam 303 was originally listed for $10k, so at $6k it's a steal!

It was at $10k. "Where's your child" is a classic acid track, but come on now...$6k for a TB-303 that probably wasn't even the one used to make that song.

will be difficould, the 909 paint likes to keep marker pens forever..at least a shadow of it...

Such things look disgusting but add a collectors value..if not now than in 20 years.. Ritchie is not nobody..

Hey all,

Thanks so much for your help. I sold it on eBay and it went for about $2K. That's about what I wanted for it anyway. I'm very happy with that.

I didn't think anyone would care about the autograph, but I was just curious.

Again, thanks.

Hasn't this been on sale for 10 years? I have seen this available for quite a long time.

Signatures on gear only make them worth less to me. No offense, but I never understood autographs myself except for children or maybe personal memories.
