That's an interesting way to put it. Like Yoozer's link alludes to, you could always get faster communication with a synchronous data transfer of arbitrary clock speed. Likewise, you could use some kind of parallel interface if you felt it was necessary.
I don't think of MIDI as having any shortcomings. I mean, it is
only as fast as it is, but it wasn't designed to be faster.
At any rate, I don't know what internal communication is used in any synth, but I've never had a problem controlling a synth externally and had to switch to internal control because of any MIDI "shortcomings."
