Difference between internal and external control ? Synths internally MIDI controlled?

I was wondering whether, because of the shortcomings of the MIDI standard, there is a difference between controlling a keyboard synth externally or internally ?

The Prophet 08 for example. Is its internal keyboard controlling the synth engine via MIDI or via something better ?

Thanks

This blog post is pretty neat, because it's talking about a modern polyphonic design: Ambika's story | Mutable instruments

There's this quote:

Master>slave communication. MIDI was too slow, even with a maxed out serial link at 115kbps
Chances are DSI encountered the same - (or not at all, since mr. Smith was responsible for MIDI in the first place, so they knew they wouldn't even have to try) so they use a faster internal control. You'll have to ask DSI/Pym to confirm this, though .

That's an interesting way to put it. Like Yoozer's link alludes to, you could always get faster communication with a synchronous data transfer of arbitrary clock speed. Likewise, you could use some kind of parallel interface if you felt it was necessary.
I don't think of MIDI as having any shortcomings. I mean, it is only as fast as it is, but it wasn't designed to be faster.
At any rate, I don't know what internal communication is used in any synth, but I've never had a problem controlling a synth externally and had to switch to internal control because of any MIDI "shortcomings."
