Re: Deadmau5 - Faxing Berlin/Keeping Things Interesting

I'm studying the arrangement, and so far the things that are keeping the arrangement moving are:

Lead vol, decay & filter automation , one lead variation at the 2nd break, pad automated underneath it

automated percussion and fx loop that runs the entire song

clap automation

Delay automation on a loop

Scattered FX

Percussion changes

AM I MISSING ANYTHING HERE?

if you climb a ladder you can't start in the middle.

to the OP: you missed the panning effect contrasting (standard) mono layers.
those things you mention are icing on the cake. it's not where the "magic" happens. arrangement is more than that.
but ok more on topic: as a basis our mouse here seperated the elements not only on the time scale (intro, verse etc.) but also in layers of frequency, and created tension between those.

I'm not sure what you mean. I am not very good at listening for the stereo aspect of production.

The automation isn't there just to spice things up. Maybe I was a bit misleading. The automation is really essential for controlling the journey of the entire song. If Mau5 took out the automation, it would just be another song.

I don't see the song as standard pop song, but as more of a long crescendo that has peaks and valleys.

Actually I think this is a pretty damn good track, maybe his best. Moody, emotional, stands up to multiple listens. Those are things 99% of dance music doesn't manage. The mix is flawless too.

I agree. It seems to have some soul in it (I don't mean the genre). It is the best track he has done so far IMO.

Set your speakers up in a way that you can.
Basic: Position the speakers so it forms a triangle with equal sides, the listening position is the third point of the triangle.
Most (incl. myself) like to sit just "inside" the triangle.

No you weren't misleading. Everyone has a different way of looking at and building/deconstructing a song.

No it's not a standard pop song. I does follow a standard formula of arrangement.
Good luck with it!

I don't know if you do it but try listening with a plug-in that can switch between mono and stereo info so you can hear some other things better.

Yha. I was hoping good house was making a come back, but he kind of got into the more boring stuff later in his career.

THere's some AMAZINGGGGGGGG underground house and disco going on RIGHT now though! I hope it gets bigger (but not too big lol).

Yha. He was really on to something in the beginning. This is my fave track by him. He has a few other pretty ace ones. Lots of harmonies and melody in it (he was actually more harmony based which I liked). I remembering hearing some stuff and going "hmm pretty good", but then I heard Faxing Berlin and I was like "ohhh yha, this is some NICE stuff". Sounded really "thick" mix wise. Haunting, beautiful, nostalgic but modern. I loved it.

His new stuff is just okay. I've seen him live 4 times and he's not consistent, but pretty good. He did upload a new track recently which has some nice orchestra strings on it and goes back to this house vibe. It's on his soundcloud. Hope he goes with it and puts out an album or EP of similar ideas.

Deadmau5's tunes are some of the only ones that I can listen to over and over, where alot of other tunes I dismiss after hearing just a few times. I think it really all boils down to his perfect EQ, sound selection and arrangement.

Another cool thing which I've recently discovered: if you put Brazil or Strobe into a plug in like ozone with a vectorscope and you focus only on the sub bass you'll notice that its not even mono. His sub bass is actually stereo in those tracks and theres phasing going on giving the bass an inconsistent feel which heavily deaveates from normal standard house music. I dunno I thought that was pretty crazy. God forbid his tracks are ever played in mono.
