Step Sequencing Battery Using Maschine

Hey Everyone,

I'm thinking of buying a Maschine because my programming workflow, especially with Battery, is a pain. I'd really love to have a step sequencer, something akin to older drum machines, so I dig what Maschine is doing, but I'm just not sure about how the two integrate.

I understand that Maschine's pads can just be turned into notes that trigger the cells in Battery, but that's no different than any other midi controller. Can you use Maschine's step sequencer on Battery and adjust all the usual parameters (swing, velocity, etc.)?

Also, I'd love to hear any comments on the quality of the workflow using the two?

Thanks!

I can't tell about Maschine's Step Sequencer as I found it rather uncomfortable to use.
But what I did before was routing Maschine's pads to Battery's cells, simply done by Midi Learn, and have that saved as template kit for Battery. Then I could play Battery with the Maschine controller and have it sequenced directly in the DAW.

But I find Maschine the instrument much better sounding than Battery, so I actually only use FXpansion Geist as sequencer for Maschine or other drum instances.
Is your DAW supporting VST? Then Geist might be something for you, it's a great way to step-sequence imho, also Battery, (and much cheaper than Maschine, if you don't need the hardware).

I just really didn't like Maschine as step sequencer, I'm still considering Analogue Solutions Europa as a hardware step sequencer.

you can use Maschine as step sequencer but i sold it rather quickly and are moving to Geist.
my main concern with Maschine was switching between controller and computer screen too often - and with Geist i can see ALL drum tracks at once in a nicely laid out grid view as opposed to a one track a time view in Maschine ( lended from old TR style programming ).

Thanks so much for the answers. I gather that you guys aren't happy with Maschine. The tactility of it seemed really appealing though. What is everyone using for hardware with Geist? Is there any way of getting the Maschine type tactility with Geist? (Without spending a fortune)

I actually use Maschine to trigger Geist's pads.
In Geist, I have incoming data quantized, so I can easily "play" Geist with Maschine, best of both worlds, as I also like the tactility of Maschine. Just its sequencer is - in my opinion - quite uncomfortable.

Sometimes I even do this scenario:

Play Maschine's pads > sequence with Geist > trigger an external soft (like Battery) or hard synth (like DRM1 mk3).

Important question: What system are you using? Which DAW especially?

Pro Tools mainly but sometimes Logic as well. Why do you ask?

Asking because sequencing with Geist would only work if your DAW supports VST. At least, AI doesn't support midi out of a plugin... which would rule out already Logic.
For Logic, you'd need a hardware sequencer to get something else than the internal sequencer.
Anyone correct me if I'm wrong there.

but you can always drag and drop patterns to your daw or at least save patterns as midi file and import these midi files into your daw, can't you?

i prefer Geist over Maschine and i happily trade better tactillity for better overview!
ymmv

What about RTAS? It says that Geist will run RTAS. Would there be any difference than with VST?
