Omar S Synth

Hey guys

Another re-creation question here.

How would I create this bass synth (kicks in from the start)

I want to try & create it in Massive but am having problems. Seems like a simple square wave filtered with saturation. Can anyone shed any light?

I think you're right that it's a square wave, or at least a pretty open pulse wave. Maybe some pulse width modulation? Some kind of modulation for sure, sounds like it's going through a chorus effect with a really slow rotation rate. It also sounds like there's a second oscillator down there a bit.

I have not peeped the link but am very familiar with Omar S.

As the guy above me mentions - Omar S is a well known user of the DSI Polyevolver. He has a lot of tracks that are solely Multitracked PEK.

There is a Triangle wave (as a sort of bass/lead synth sound) but also 1 octave below sounds like another Triangle wave...dont use any resonance on either...then give it a bit of drive and that should do it...then some chorus but keep it in mono...

You could do that drum beat with a MFB 522...or samples of...

EDIT - its Triangle waves...

by an analog synth. simple. Or tweak knobs into infinity with a digital synth to get a simple analog tone.

i did this for fun using free Synth1 as Ive just installed Live on my laptop...2 instances of Synth1 worked better treating each individually with Ableton EQ, saturation, overdrive and vinyl fx...need some low level noise in the bass synth also but no noise source in Synth1 I can see...

approximation of tune...

however - its not quite as sonorous as the Omar tune...Id guess it was done with an analogue synth and chorus.

Great stuff. Did you just use Triangle waves?

His new stuff is cool and he has a great knack of getting simple ideas to sound good. I still prefer his older stuff though; so dirty and nasty. This sounds like early Aphex twin holidaying in Detroit:

Dunno (or care) what was used, but one of the tricks to getting lush sounds out of the the evolver is modulating the delays, especially when linked to sequencer steps, so they can go way slow.

Thankfully, the delays aren't analog or tape modeled so changing their speed doesn't get those artifacts!

Got pretty close on my MFB Microzwerg. Two triangle waves, same octave but one tuned a 5th above the other. Mixed 50/50. Almost open filter, with a small amount of resonance. A touch of envelope on the filter and amp.
