He called me an idiot after I tried to explain NY compression (i.e. Parallel compression.) All the nut-swingers jumped on my case after that. I logged.

NMS,

Are your opinions of Deadmau5 based on actually knowing him? or just based on watching his ustream, media etc ... I wonder if your statements are based on fact, or speculation in general?

I know I know. I just like to call him DeadmauFive to mock him because his name sounds as stupid and uninspired as his music. His studio photos prove once again: Lots of gear doesn't automatically give you talent.

Now we are even questioning the sanity of other GS members, who want to know more about DM5s production techniques? This thread just achieved a new level of low!

I dunno man, I'd say he's doing a *hell* of a lot better than you or I... I'm sure that's worth something. Why lower yourself to petty jealousy and derision?

I really don't think he ever plans on reselling the gear, and with as much money as he makes, I'm sure he can pay to get them cleaned and/or replaced when necessary.

What I question is the amount of people commenting on Deadmau5 as a person, his struggles etc ... I just ask how much of that is speculation, or coming from people that actually know him.

I have been to Joel's new studio, hung out with him as he played with his modular system etc ... We even have the same studio builder. So, I find it very strange some of the comments people make on here thinking they know what goes on in his head. It's wrong to think you know someone cause you watch their live stream etc ... many of the statements made in this whole thread are incorrect from what I've seen.

Its the internet. I doubt many people would act the same to his face.
Besides, his work ethic is unstoppable. No one can take that away from him. He's been going all night, as usual.

I have to say, this is the thread that has made me look at Deadmou5 a bit differently. Not only have I more respect towards him, but there's a level of admiration attached to that as well. I see a guy, who absolutely LOVES what he does and the technology that it involves; I see a gamer, a computer geek, that dude you always found eccentric but got (get) along with so well. I guess that what I'm trying to say is that I see this guy could be any one of us, he "made" it and he's still "one of us" (and it seems to be that he is one of those who actually worked there asses off to get there), he buy's a shitload of gear, probably has friends over to mess around and jam, etc. I simply wish him the best.

I'm not jealous. I just think his music is shite. That's my honest opinion. Of course shite sells well so he gets fame but I'm not jealous about it. It's just that people like him make the world a worse place to live in.

That's some example of heroic physical and mental endurance. A struggle like no human faced before.

Sorry, but I got into this thread after being asked comments elsewhere about his synth...

well, now I know why one day Bob Moog sat down, wept bitterly and desperately...

He did forecast what the future would be.

He was mistaken though: he didn't dumb down the machine enough.

Are you that conceited, that a style of music you dont even listen to makes the world a worse place to live? Wow thats a pretty f***ing first world luxury right there. Let me guess your vegan as well.

Funny, you're only echoing what Joel himself said. The skill comes from the studio, not the stage.

Bob Moog did not design the minimoog. In fact he believed that it was a bad idea : too limited.

Well...when he was on here with his "psuedo anonymous" account around Christmas, all he did was troll and be obnoxious and arrogant while dropping not-too-subtle hints about his awesome superstarness.

It would have been nice if he would have contributed something useful, but instead he wanted to play games while being (not very) anonymous.

There are plenty of people here that have extensive studios, synth collections and deep catalogs that aren't rude and juvenile, and contribute to the boards.

He won't be one of them.

You want to see how it should be done? Just look at Mr. Clouser in the Nine Inch nails thread. NIN gets bashed around plenty, but that doesn't mean Charlie is going to troll the board with posts like " Y U Mad? U just jellie, bro?"

Personally, I'm more impressed by someone's character and art, than their ability to use their credit card.

it's just cheesy pop music. i don't know why everyone gets so upset. this isn't party music or a rave. i don't know why people around in the 90s even pretend that this stuff.. deadmau5, skrillex etc even has anything remotely in common with the scenes in the 90s or the small pockets of real electronic music in various cities that still are part of a real scene where cool things happen... this stuff is just big silly music for kids.

I swung by to check out the hype when he played the Sahara in 2010...I only lasted about 2 songs.

Nice light show, though. That's the important thing.

Edit - although, to be fair I had previously hopped from Pretty Lights to LCD Soundsystem, To Little Dragon, and finally Fever Ray (which was one of the best shows ever) - he really didn't stand a chance.

I gotta admit watching these videos has actually inspired me. I've started digging into Reaktor (the poor mans modcan?) for the first time and am having a lot of fun!

Hey, guess what, this just in: I'm watching a video stream in high definition of someone on the other side of the world showing a riconkulous collection of synthesizers!

How goddamn awesome is that?

What can fresh GS member "daltron" possibly do to top that? Oh wait, here's what: nothing!

What kind of trail you want to leave here? Bitching about popular artists to show that you've got great taste in music, or something constructive?

I've got my own opinions about deadmau5's style and superstar-ness, but it would be worth pointing out that he's been working with modular gear for a while. He didn't just spend his gig millions on these racks.

For reference, here is a picture of Joel's old apartment studio:

Kind of cozy considering this new set up he put together!

Can anyone identify some of the rack gear in that center island in the new studio? I see one BBE 882i Sound Maximizer in there somewhere. Thought those were a gimmick :P

In that 2nd vid where he is playing the Close encounters tune. What is the deal with the massivetouch screen?

Any idea what software this is??? This is some how attached to the modular? Is this why there arent many keys or stepsequencers in the room?
