Heck, even BSOD was fun.

I would not compare these artists to David Guetta and the like.

I suspect many of those producers/bands above have moved more into tech house today where you could still experiment.
I think Peaches was pretty influential in the development of this sound. Miss kitten and the Hacker were certainly there, also FisherSpooner too. Before electro house there was electro clash... Errr electro trash...whatever.

Man, that guys forums are very resourceful and I've never run across a crappy tutorial. I highly recommend checking out the msg board and this guys site!

I remember doing dance parties in 04 jamming out to le-tigre,fishcerspooner, miss kitten, peaches... It was usually a mix of dark wave, 80's depece mode/new order and electroclash. I knew it was going to get bad when I heard ladytron was working on the new christina aguilera album in 06. Seems like many of the producers back then jumped ship to shape what we have now in mainstream. I like some new stuff, but once you been in small clubs hearing it and then almost 5=10 years later it's all over the radio and bigger clubs it's a bit worn out like been there done that already.

The main technique you need is sidechaining distorted sawtooth basslines, or side chaining tracks containing lots of different simple snippetts of distorted bass a la complextro.

When you do that you'll probably sit down and laugh - ha - its just a trick!

On top of that you just noodle with the attack decay and release of a synth to create build ups and changes of texture a la mau5.

Check this. A far cry from all that electro-house wank.

Don't forget Legowelt when discussing the electroclash/electro house stuff reminiscent 2000s--he was, and still is, way ahead of the curve.

To point you in the right direction, OP. Most edbanger stuff you're talking about is not synth based. It's small samples cut together to make melodies. (for planisphere the harsh sounds seem to be re-sampling the synths/keyboards). You then put a limiter/distortion on the channel to glue the sounds together and make it huge and harsh.

For the drums, it's mainly old drum machines that are effected to shit (read compressed). From what I can guess, Justice probably write their songs on piano first.

Search Justice or edbanger on gearslutz, lots of topics on this.

Compress individual sounds, don't be afraid of hard eq cuts and sweeps, distort things and put a hard but fast sidechain triggered by the kick.

This. Great album.

Also, check out Mr. Oizo.
Another Ed Banger, like much of the rest of them, but more time-bending, glitchy experimentation going on.

You might like Fake Blood too, though some people call him "fidget-house", he's just making maximal, glitchy electro-house with a shuffly beat.
Very rave.

Nice one Whatupdoe?

I mean we could have avoided this whole thing if the DUMB ASSES who didn't know shit about the history of dance music didn't call their 'new genre' Electro House. Now even more dumb asses are dropping the house part and it's making the learned people rightfully pissed.

It'd be like if dubstep was called alt rock step. Think of all the Nickleback fans that'd be pissed. I wouldn't blame them for once.

In all seriousness if you want heavier (I actually make heavy breaks which is an offshoot of the original electro-funk being posted here) but appreciate a good heavy EH tune from time to time.

Interesting that Far Too Loud seems to be jumping onto the Knife Party wagon... Not that I dislike it... way more fun than most of the super repetitive electro house out there these days.

If you're gonna make some womps at least make them cool womps imo

I am really grumpy when it comes to EDM. I basically like so little these days but these guys I like. I do want to say FTL was doing complextro EH before Knife Party got involved. I don't care much for Pendulum...errrr ummmmm....I mean Knife Party. LOL.
