Ensoniq MR Rack

Hello,

I can buy a used Ensoniq MR rack for about 150$. Still worth the buy these days? I always wanted to have an Ensoniq synth, I love the SQ8L vst but the MR offers me Transwaves. Does anyone have any experience with this module?
Thanks a lot in advance for any reply!

Well worthy 150$!

It has some great ambient patches. I found one of the best synth strings patch ever among them. Good 808 samples and effect section. Piano too.

To bad it has very limited programmability via front pannel. I don't like soft programmers so I sold it. Midi quest would do fine here.

High class synth, that for sure.

If I ever find MR61 for sale here (for resonable money), I'd probably jump on it.

Its got lofi hifi samples.Sounds thick and chewey.Great drum kits.Fast tight responce and easy to programme with not glitching or twatting.FX great of course.16 channels.Somewhat limited tweaking but doable.Never used the soft midi editing but really should try used it for most of this track-

Session by Dryad-66 on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free

with the urban dance card which is very cool.Overall i would be a moron to sell it.Its warm and got character.

Damn, where were you months ago when I was struggling to sell my MR61?

The MR engine sounds incredible. However, there is VERY limited editability from the panel, so you have to use Unisyn, and for Mac users like me, you would have to get an old computer running an old O.S. and you can see how fast it gets very complicated. It's a giant pain in the ass.

However, on the MR61 the sequencer is pretty fascinating. It is SO CLOSE to being the best sequencer ever. But somehow, it was always fiddly, and loading and saving to a floppy, also was a pain.

In the end, despite sounding so good, I couldn't get the MR61 to work for me. But it was really, a very cool keyboard.

Actually, it may be wiser to get the the rack version. I would say $150 is well worth a small rack of MR sounds.

I found it to be the best sounding rompler I have used. The effects based on Ensoniq's ESP2 chip the same ones used in the DP4 and probably what gives it that "warm" character. Way better IMHO than the e-mu boxes. As the previous poster mentioned get it with the Urban Dance Card & World Expansion Card for unlimited drum sounds.

In the late 90's I was chatting to Louie Vega about gear and at that time he mentioned that he And Kenny Dope were using the MR Keyboard in their studio.

While Im a fan of almost all ensoniq gear, (and I have an mr61) I still prefer the sound of the older ensoniq boards, like the SD1 / TS10. They sound more meaty to me, plus more programable For $150 its still a a great grab thou, get that ish Almost all ensoniq are underrated in my eyes.

O.S. for MR-61

Hello,

I'm looking for the latest O.S. for my MR-61 (v. 2.11, I believe). Anybody please could help me? Please send a mail.

Thank you very much,
Akos

Managed to get my hands on an MR-61 a few months ago and it does sound quite deep and expensive. And the effects are as rich as anything I've heard coming from a workstation keyboard.

Still need to track down a copy of the Unisyn editor, though. Anybody here still have it kicking around? (Even if it is Mac OS9, it's not a problem; I keep an old Powerbook around for that purpose.)
Thanks,

V.

Another really cool thing about the MR is the way in which sounds are selected using the two front panel knobs, one for category and the other for scrolling through sounds in the selected category. Doesn't get easier or faster than that.

I've got a MR-76 and would also like to get hold of a copy of Unisyn.
I've had no luck trying to use Midiquest.

I bought it.
It has some very usable and powerful sounds on board but I will keep it forever for just one patch: 'Warm Bath', absolutely the best strings I have ever heard!
