Get a monotribe. They're a tonne of fun. You can play them anywhere. But they have a wicked sound and they're useful in the studio.

Unless you're happy to play with a stylus though (I am sort-of used to it) you'll need a MIDI modifier kit - there are a couple I know of that are available - just unscrew and plug in. I haven't done this but I've heard it works great.

There are many other options for synths under $1000 that are better than the monotribe in varying degrees, but I think there's nothing exactly like it that have MIDI, for that price.

Here's a tune of mine where the monotribe is playing the melody... I did it all with a stylus. (actually a metal pencil).

miditribe! Amazing Machines

The site seems to be perpetually sold out, but I've found a few of these up on eBay for list price. The board I got has MIDI I/O and even has a few MIDI mappings for the filters on the Monotribe. Gonna have to map VCA to a bend wheel on my MPK or something

I bought a Duo and a Delay last month when GC had a sale making them $40 each. My kids (2 girls, ages 4 and nearly 7) will come oevr and ask to play w/a synthesizer and tweak away . I had a Monotribe but I didn't click w/it as well as I wanted and returned it.

I just got the monotribe Wednesday, So I made this quick tune. Really intuitive and easy to learn piece of gear.

The ribon is a bit hard to play without a pen or something though.

Yep, great fun bit of kit for cheap, got mine with Altitudes midi kit pre installed from the previous owner, works a charm. Very much worth adding midi.

Really thinking of getting one now. Are there any issues with the sound/output (ie: noisy output, clicks/pops)?

And how does it compare to the bass/lead if compared to a Mopho/Tetra?

I haven't noticed any issues with the sound.

But no way to compare it with Mopho/Tetra, These two are on a different level both price and feature wise. Specially the Tetra. It's an unfair match to compare them.

I don't think the two are related. Does not matter if it is before or after the update:
Korg has released System Version 2 for the Monotribe – a major firmware update that adds sample and hold, a new sync capabilities, 16 step synth sequences and more.

Here’s what’s new in Korg Monotribe System Version 2:

Sequencer:
Synth part resolution has been doubled to 16 Steps
Volume Automation has been added to the synth part.
Active Step can be specified for each part.
Drum Roll capability has been added.
Gate Time Hold function has been added.
Synthesizer:
Sample and Hold (S&H) function added to LFO.
Sync:
Connected sequences allow multiple monotribe units to play in rotation.
Half Tempo function has been added.
Short Cut Keys:
Four convenient shortcuts for creating patterns quickly
Goto Korg website for update.
The link below will show you how to do the update. Very easy!

Mostly concerned about the sound comparison especially for bass/leads. I know they don't compare to DSI price or feature wise.
Listening to demos online helps, but often you can't hear the true sound of something until you hear it in person.
I have a Tetra and was just wondering if a Monotribe purchase would be redundant, sound wise, or if it has a different character altogether.

That reminds me, how does it sound when filtering outside sources? Thanks guys.

I hooked mine up to my Alpha Juno for some 4 pole full resonance action.
The AJ filter is beautiful as it is, not fully resonant.
Works great. But it is a VERY aggressive filter, indeed!

I haven't tried to use the Monotribe to filter an external source but from what I've heard it only works if the synth is playing at the same time which kinda sucks if true. I'll have to check it out later too see if this is right or not.
