Filter sweeps embarrassing.
But it does do quite a lot.
The draw bar organ not bad at all actually.
Good for what it is. A first performance type unit.
Come On... Watch THIS and then tell me these Filters are Bad! Its DUPLICATING an F-ing CS-80.. The King of Filters and Doing it Very Well!. I Have an XV and I Actually have This Exact Patch. Its Extremely Close to the Original.. Blade Runner opening theme on a Casio XW-P1 - YouTube Its a $500 Synth that Sounds Like a $3000 Workstation!

Really? You joking right? Have you actually played it?
I have never played a CS80.
Nick practically laughed and the filter stepped like crazy.
The lack of interest in this thread seems to point to it not being too great.
Its a good value though and I look forward to hearing it in person.
I wouldn't mind a cheapo multi- timbral synth in my rig at some point.
The filters can be smooth and melodic, which is why I programmed that Vangelis style lead to demonstrate it. We released that lead along with some others in a downloadable bank last week for free. The first set of many for the XW.
Yes, extreme and quick knob movements do result in some stepping. I'm not sure if anything can be done to improve this in future OS updates but I'll be in Tokyo next week to see what I can find out.

Glad to hear from you again Mike!! I saw your other demo on Kraft and was excellent as usual.
I never judge a synth until I hear it in person, but the stepping was gash. I really hope you can fix it as something like that can be damaging to the less tolerant. Especially here.
Not a deal breaker for me as I feel comfortable enough with synth that I can use the other aspects of it. I just don't want to spend $3k on a performance synth but need to explore a multi-timbral unit.
I can always use the filter in my MEK or Monotribe.
So, were you involved in the programming of the synth as it leaves the factory or as it ended up in the UK for the review?
Thanks agian, Mike. I wish you all the best!
If you end up getting one, be careful with it. It's not built for gigging and bumping around. I went to demo one when I was looking for a less expensive alternative for a draw-bar performance organ like a VK-7/8/8M..etc. Everything is cheap on this keyboard. The disc on the front bows when you move it, the sliders/faders are very slick and wobble, the knobs have a lot of play, and the pitch/mod wheels feel like the wheels you get on a toy truck. I always give a keyboard at least 2 demos, just in case I missed something or it was an off-day. I came back a month later and the demo model was already broken. Don't get me wrong, it's not uncommon to have keyboards break on a show-floor. But, there was an Ultranova, Gaia, and Venom sitting there without any damaged parts. It just looks bad. Hearing it in-person wasn't impressive either, but that's just my opinion.
On the other hand, panel colours stringly resemble an alarm clock I owned in 1986
The best feature seems to be the poetic and catchy name.
[OMG! Once upon a time, "this looks and sound like shit" was a legitimate review. Now, it sounds MANDATORY to find something decent or even thrilling in EVERY single piece of junk which is thrown to the market]
He's clipping the inputs pretty badly when doing the filter sweep. Also there doesn't seem to be any interpolation or high-resolution control of the filter when controlling it via the knob, just 127 discrete values. That doesn't mean there will be stepping when swepping it with an Env or LFO. Those tend to be much higher resolution (16-bit or 65 thousand possible values, or 32-bit - 4 billion discrete values).
It should be possible to implement interpolation in a future update. That would be a good idea, and also for the Mod which I assume also sends standard 7-bit MIDI data to the synth engine.
My thoughts on the filters: They step fairly audibly, but they don't sound bland or weak, rather they seem punchy, thick, ballsy in an imprecise, slightly messy fashion.
Moog fanatics will throw up, but there are worse-sounding digital filters out there.
There's a lot to like...I think the monosynth sounds really good, and generally the tone of the raw oscillators is quite nice. I like it better than the Alesis Ion or Blofeld which I previously owned. However, not as nice as a Nord Lead or Kurzweil (again just my opinion). Also, as I've said before the sequencer is pretty cool.
However, as a pretty devout organ player, I think the organ is mediocre. It's a nice extra for non-organists, but is not in the same league as the clonewheels.
Yes, the menu diving has gotten to be kind of a pain in the ass, especially as I learn the deeper aspects. But, again, you have to keep in mind there's a helluva lot there for five hundred bucks. I would have killed for a synth this cheap and rich with features when I was 16 (meaning very poor).
I think if you approach it with real creativity, you can get a lot of very interesting results, especially the sequencer.
