Rare case where more gear helps: CSQ hides SH-09 issue!

So, I got the SH-09 in the early 80s. Got a deal on it from a friend who got it new.

Lately it's had minor issues with multiple note triggering from the internal keyboard. Not constant, but enough to be an issue on some parts.

Well, a few years after I got it, I also picked up a CSQ-100 sequencer which works well with it. Local dealer was just looking to unload it and gave me a great deal.

Did lots of stuff back in the day with the SH-09, CSQ and my TR-606. The TR-606 went insane a few years ago and I haven't been using the CSQ as much since.

Last night I hooked the CSQ back up to the SH-09 and lo and behold, the thing has no triggering issues. Probably tells me a bit about where the problem in the SH-09 lies, though I'm less concerned now that it's working. I had already noticed that the problem seemed to go away if I controlled the SH-09 from the Kenton MIDI to CV.

Anyway, it was a pleasant surprise that not only does the CSQ still work fine, but it seems to bypass the SH-09's triggering issue as well!

Cheers,

Otto

Its most likley built up dirt or residue in the switch assembly of the keyboard. I have this same problem on my SH-09 and going to try and clean it to see if it solves the issue.

Since you can trigger fine with an external trigger source this means the rest of the electronics work well.

its the keyboard. CV and gate input will bypass it.

you can open it up and clean the contacts with meths or IPA or vodka

You are probably right and I will try cleaning contacts on the keyboard mechanism. Not a big IPA fan and don't think a brown ale or porter will help the contacts so it will probably be some pure cleaning solvent.

What I find interesting is that I'm running the CV/ gate output from the SH-09 to the CSQ and then running the CSQ output back and it works great, even if the CSQ isn't playing a sequence and is just passing the same signal back and playing the same notes.

OTOH, if I unplug and play the same part without the CSQ in the path, there will be some double triggered notes. Need to look at the schematic again and see what's different in the path of internal keyboard only versus using the CV/ gate output and input.

Thanks!

Otto
