check wether something is "in key" or not

dunno, maybe it will sound silly to all of you. Main rule seems to be if it sounds ok it sounds ok,but few times i caught myself that when i worked longer on something i could miss minor errors and some sounds could be out of key.

So lets say ,i found a nice sample of nice industrial short sound ,and i would like to know wether i should work on some pitchshifting or not in order tobe sure it fits 100% to my track . How do you check it ?Always by ear? because mine ear after some time hearing something starts to get used to it too much and i have problems to differ something fitting ok or being bad...

Im pretty sure you have guys experience in this matter

Some DAW's have tuners, if not you might be able to find a plugin. If the sound is too short to get an accurate reading, you can sustain it through compression or distortion.

Failing that, you can just do it by ear - load up something clean and preferably acoustic, like a piano or guitar library, and try comparing them that way.

That said, my #1 rule of "If it sounds good..." always applies. If it sounds the way you want it to, go for it

Only time I need to do that, is when I sometimes do remixes and want to know the exact notes of the audio files.
Then I usually just load the files into Melodyne, cause I'm a lazy bastard.

Ear, compare it to a sine wave (by ear) or a tuner plug in, melda does a free one. When you're talking about more abstract noise it can be more complex, could be in key, could be the same not but it still might not fit tonally.

I tend to just play on a piano until I've identified. It's also good practice. If I'm in a hurry, I'll use a tuner.

And the moon is a hollow device used by the Illuminati to control our minds, according to youtube..

I think we're uncovering a great mystery here..

Knowing if something is in key is as easy as knowing 'whether' something is spelled right or not... A matter of 'whether' you've had the practise or not perhabs
