How would you set up this 80s/ 90s collection of mid-range gear?

Hi folks,

Longtime GS lurker, recent first time poster here. Here is my first self involved post.

I have put out a fair amount of records/ tracks – mostly DAW composed with hybrids of soft synths and hardware. Over the last year I have built up a decent collection of hardware – to the point now where now almost everything is composed with hardware. To the point now, that Ableton sync is a major issue.

I have never been a fast producer. A song that gets released usually takes 2 months to get 100% mixed and off to mastering. It really frustrates me. Time is sparse with the day job so I really only have evenings and weekends.

A few months ago I got an MPC 60 and have learned it pretty well. A friend and I recently hooked all the synths up to it and just basically jammed a whole night then recorded the whole jam as multi-tracks into the DAW with live automation and such, then edited the jams down in Ableton, then mixed them in Mixbus.

All things said and done I had 2 decent songs in 4 sessions. One jamming/ recording, one editing, two mixing. It was ****ing awesome and completely changed how I thought about writing. I want to really try to go down this path for trying to write faster.

I have been re-evaluating my set up and plan on rewiring the whole rig to the MPC 60, then messing with trying to sync it with ableton via FSK or SMPTE. If this doesn’t work well, I would consider buying the inner clock system. I have my own ideas of how to set it up but I was thinking I would pose the question...

“If you had all the below gear and wanted to try to write tunes the way I suggested above – how would you set it up” - please keep in mind I will not have much money to invest in new gear the next few months. I would need to keep a cap of $1000 on any gear suggestions.

We mostly do deeper house/ disco and lo-fi is all good. Most tunes have female vox but are not really songs per se. You can get an idea of what we do here

The Moullinex remix is prolly the best example of the sound we are doing now.

Thanks! Curious to hear what you guys would do!

Akai MPC's work very well you should be fine. I use to sync the MPC 3000 to a JL cooper box that cost me about $150.00. To my Tascam 4 track FSK smart sync and it worked great. You having a Macbook Pro should be good. Also great work and nice setup.

If you want to stay out of the box like that invest in a good MIDI patchbay. Not just an USB MIDI interface - a real patchbay that can function standalone.

Yes, the MPC has 4 outputs but you're going to be driven mad by all the daisy chaining otherwise.

Get a midi patchbay, or even just some thru boxes. Unless you absolutely need to use plugins while tracking (which considering your list, you needn't), don't bother trying to 'sync' ableton to the mpc60. Set it up so that the software starts recording with MTC says to, but don't try and match up sequences in the daw. You can always add DAW tracks later after your hardware tracks are in as audio.
