Im in love with these guys sound lately.
To me it sounds like the beats are similar to Flying Lotus?
Just trying to pull it apart.
Are the melodies reminiscent to some kind of 90's rnb?

Sidechaining the pad sound to the kick, using a long attack for the SC compressor.

The airy choir sound is a stock rompler preset. What do you have in terms of plugins or synths?

I'd say yes. I've always enjoyed that sound before it got reduced to supersaws and 808s.

this is great music!
most of it is very simple synth programing, nothing super scientific.
i don't know wich sound you mean exactly but here you go
those little bleepy sounds: simple square waves, frequency modulated slightly by an envelope and also filter modulated by an envelope in some cases
that mid bass thing is kinda the same but with some saturation (a few octaves lower of course)
that sidechained pad, wich goes tru the whole tune, im not sure about that one.. some kind of a digital synth sound or a sample...

hope that helped.

Wow I must not have been listening very well to not hear that it was dropping when the kick comes in, cheers. I own Omnisphere, Nexus2, Albino3 and a whole heap of free ones.

Yup, pretty much put it in perspective for me. Was mainly the pads because im not used to this style of music I just wanted to see if I missing anything. Thanks

Well, I checked some other tracks and they employ the same trick for another sound. All that's happening is just the volume changing; it's just that by using SC you can simply hold the keys down and not bother with setting up a separate attack and release, plus you have a different degree of control over your actual envelope shape. Though, with Omnisphere having multistage curve envelopes, it's probably possible to draw it in and make it sound like it's sidechained.

There are enough choir sounds in Omni and Nexus to cover that, you don't even have to design your own. Boost the high frequencies and cut the lows and you should be good.

Though - I should explore that class of sounds and see how hard/easy it is to make them.

and don't forget to add some chorus to make it sound wider and fuller

With these type of pads/choir sound(I like the way Royksopp do it also) is there usually much layering?
Or is it 1 track with chorus etc to make it sound thick, like bal5000 just said?

I too am trying to find the sound they use. I use fruity loops at the moment, does anyone know how to get the sound on there? if not would it be better just to suck it up and buy and learn ableton live and an apc40? also, im trying to do some stuff like xxyyxx, mister lies, tokimonsta. how do they get that sound. all of my stuff sounds terrible. does anyone know where i can go for some good resources regarding mixing and synths? im kind of at a loss right now and just had an artistic breakdown, so i apologize for all of this lol.

Which of the sounds?

That doesn't do anything for the sounds, unless you'd get the Suite version so you get more virtual instruments.

I've never heard of all of these people.

Since you know them, and you want to know more, here's a humble request: gather me some Youtube videos and point out where exactly in time the sound appears that you want to emulate. Something like: "(video) and then the high-pitched sound at 1:36" is incredibly helpful because:

- you know what sound you're thinking of
- you know what song you're thinking of
- you know what artist you're thinking of
- you know where it appears in the track

and I don't, because I'm not a psychic! So I have no idea what you mean with "that sound"

Oh god, would it be terrible if i said the blips and general percussive sounds? i know that sounds awfully vague.

Ahh ok! Sorry I'm very new to this all. Ive downloaded the demo version of ableton live 8 + suite. is that what it is called? looks too daunting and a huge learning curve compared to fruity loops.

For the sound that I'm going for is this.

Mister Lies - False Astronomy (Official Video) - YouTube

it's basically the same thing the entire track. the artist has said that he just uses ableton and an apc40 but i was hoping i could get a similiar sound with fruity loops.

I like the link regarding ITB mixes, again I'm still new to this but it seems like that is a very expensive route. and I'm just not very good at mixing vocals and tracks in general as evidenced here Kotlo's sounds on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free lol.
