Name That Snare!

UFFIE - Difficult - YouTube

I'm desperately trying to find out what snare is used in this track. I've heard more than one artist use this sample so i'm assuming that it's come from a drum machine. It sounds 80's to me, and ive researched popular 80s drum machines but cant seem to match it with any roland/oberheim/linndrum/sequential circuits machines.

This track was produced by SebastiAn, but again, cant find any info on what he uses drum wise. I can hear the snare used extensively on SebastiAn's "Total" album...if that helps anyone?!

If anyone can identify it, I would really appreciate it!

Simmons or maybe Linn. Just a guess.

definitely not Simmons (at least not their typical 'synth' snare). could be Oberheim DMX/DX, Linn LM-1/LinnDrum, SCI DrumTraks, etc... maybe a Roland TR, but i don't think so. could also be a less popular machine, like on of the early Korgs or Yamahas.

not sure about the clap.

either way, it's most definitely a sample and not the real thing.

sounds like a dmx snare pitched down. pitching can change the sound completely, so one snare you hear from a dmx pitched way up can sound like a completely different sample than one pitched way down, even though its the same drum machine and same sample

Here's a dmx snare that sounds kinda like it

Sounds like a TR-707 snare with some nice reverb on it... Maybe a bit pitched too... Try these:

It's a Linn LM1 with a little gated reverb n subtle distortion for that papery crunch.

there's def compression on it with a high attack to make it sound more punchy and yeah it sounds pitched down quite a bit

I agree.
Definitely not Simmons.
The Oberheim snares were used a lot like this back in the 80's (Prince etc).

Yep, I kinda hear a tuned-down Linn as well. But it's been processed so much that it's hard to tell where it's coming from.

The snare sounds real familiar though... seems like I've heard it several times before.

Here's a couple samples I threw together real quick. Not exact, but might get you off to a decent start. It's just some Linn samples with pretty severe compression+gating etc.

hmm, not sure if those sound quite right either. the Linn snare sounds a bit more 'loose'. really not sure about the claps in the track though, they almost sound like real handclaps to me. did you use reverb on that clap? i can't imagine that's how it sounds straight out of the Linn(?).

The Simmons Clap produces almost real sounding claps... Could be some other random sample tho

I too would go for DMX. That might be because I've been layering one for about 30 minutes though.

If you need a source try Goldbaby Custom DMX, there's some great hi/lo separate layers that have been ran through a Fatso.

Sounds like real claps to me too, augmented by a machine clap sample.

Kinda like that DMX snare better than my Linn for this one.

Regardless... free samples!

Sure I'll share ! It doesn't sound exactly like the Uffie sample so I'll skip the details. First in the chain was pitch shifter, I used the plugin that comes with Reaper and shifted it 2.45 semitones down. Next is reverb, I used Voxengo OldSkoolVerb with around 300 miliseconds of decay, low in the mix as it will come out after compression anyway. Then I squashed it with T-Racks 76 with 20:1 ratio and middle attack and release, it gives a little of initial snap and brings the body higher, it also brings excitement to this sound - some 1176 inspired plugin or hardware should work as good. After that I EQ'd with Trident A-Range plugin but basicaly it just brightens the snare because after pitch shifting it's too dark, little bit of 2kHz is added and little body, I just tried to match it with original but this plugin isn't too flexible so you could use something different. Next is stock reaper compressor in parallel that adds a lot of snap (too much) but after this is Fabfilter Pro-L which glues the snap back together. You can limit 15dB with that plugin and it still sound good so it's the one thing I would not change.
So basically you need something to add snap, something to add body, something to EQ and some simple reverb. I think there is some sound stacked under it so maybe it's just not possible to come closer without adding other sample.

^ cool man, it's gonna take me a while to wrap my head around all that but what i like about your snare is there's a kind of phasing effect on the reverb tail... also listening closely to the uffie version, it sounds like there's a kind of gate verb that cleverly pans left to right which gives a nice swoosh effect

Linn lm 1 absolutely. I'm the lm 1 expert round these parts. That's an lm 1 snare!

Since we're on the topic of snares, how about this song? It's the snare that plays during the first 45 seconds.
