Akai MPC 1000 - which version?

Hello, I'm thinking of getting myself an Akai MPC 1000 for sequencing songs... I think MPC 1000 suits my needs, but I know there are few different models around. Which ones should I avoid, as I've heard some have problems with bad pads. Is the new one, a safe purchase (http://www.audiopro-croatia.com/imag...00_photo_1.jpg) with good pods? anything else I should worry about? Thanks!

The black ones tend to be better with the pads. It's the blue ones that tend to be spotty.

I think all the black mpc1000s come with the improved pad sensors, but older red/blue units can be upgraded.

You then might also want to consider the fat pads from mpc-stuff which are a further improvement, but they only work with the newer pad sensors.

I have the red one and the pads are too stiff. It is 180$ to upgrade the pads to membrane sensor pads that feel much better. I have not upgraded them, you can also open up the MPC and put electrical tape on the sensors or something ghetto like that. That, is what I will try first. With JJOS I like the machine a good bit.

MOST of the black ones have the newer pad upgrade. Not all though. If you buy new, you'll be safe, but you'll pay quite a bit. If you see a good one on eBay you might think about that too.

And you might think about one with a hard drive already installed as that's really handy for loading anything and not worrying about space issues.

And definitely upgrade to the JJOS. It's a guy that used to work for Akai who puts out a superior OS. That operating system adds a TON of features to the MPC1000 and 2500.

Then go for MPC Stuff fat pads, wood panels, different screen colors...you can really style it out.

Overall a great little machine!

I found out (after buying an expensive new MPC1000 locally) this better price at Thomann Europe
I did want to buy new. A lot of the second hand MPC1000s are banged up.

Harddrive... Get the harddrive kit.
Get a harddrive-->CF Card adaptor (10 benniebucks in HongKong)
Mount a 32 GB (or biggerer) CF card in there.
Turn on power
???
profit!

And I want that black backlight replacement.
badly!

I bought a black one with internal HD, full memory upgrade and JJOS from eBay for £300.

Supposedly, any serial number with BK-N are the new ones, but rather than search for specific serial numbers, as I understand it, the old pads were separate from each other, so when you slightly move one, the others wouldn't move. The new pads are on one rubber piece under the faceplate, so if you move one the other pads around it move slightly.
