Women & Synths

i think it's hot when women are either into or are playing the niche vintage keyboards we all obsess over.

"Over 20 different NYC female keyboardists playing vintage keyboards at Joe McGinty's Carousel Studio in Brooklyn, NY."

a friend playing my akai ax80 (she's really a violinist which explains her sloppy playing). anyone else share this guilty pleasure?

And in case you get confused and forget whether or not a keytar is ok for some specific purpose, I updated the panflute flowchart:

ive listened to her other pieces too.

yes, the girl is hot. her tehnique is flawless too.

but her composition style, harmonies, and constant over the top breaks are just boring overkill wankage fest. un-musical butchery concentrated on "look what i can do" and "how fast i can do it". no emotion or beauty.

i think piano fits her best, she sounds most expressive there, and here i can take the fireworks easier as its so organic. however her nord rhodes is so cliche free jazz it makes me sleepy, its been played thousand times before. and the synth... the choice of sounds is terrible, the uncontrolled pitch bend wank goes over the top... at moments it makes hair stand up on the back of my neck..

somebody should give her a minimoog, and mod it to limit the pitch bend range . or she should listen to some Patrick Moraz.

the keytar videos were just too awful to even comment.

i prefer this girl.. i don't have a recording to prove it, but you'll have to trust me on this one . she plays juuuuuust beautifully. ..

aaaah hiromi, she is very very good and technicaly out of this world... really not what I enjoy *these days* (had my tribal tech, fusion phase back in the day) but definately burning... just not my taste anymore.

And much better music than Hiromi, and no phallic riding of Keytars.

ah which reminds me of my favorite, for real this time. love her playing piano, keys, her music, and above all her phenomenal voice.

Best Venn diagram ever. "Keytar Platypus" would have made a good punk band name IMO. As long as they didn't play keytars.

hiromi. of course. she's wonderful. i agree with a lot of the comments here. she is a little too heavy on the technique side and could open up to more emotion and musicality. i think she does sound more musical on her studio albums rather than live, which i guess the adrenaline of performing really gets to her super energetic mind.

i had the honor of meeting hiromi last year at yoshi's jazz club in oakland.

a an example of a virtuosic performance (her band is killer right there with her):

and an example of her stepping into more musical territory, but not too much.. still gets pretty overly technical/"look what i can do". great one to watch, either way:

Without wishing to give too much commentary on the male bias inherent in the opening sentence, I'd like to point out that the 'we' you refer to (presumably readers of this forum) already contain females. I don't think that there is much argument that gear geekery is a largely male 'thing', so this can be forgiven.

Also, musical integrity and exploration is much 'hotter' than musical masturbation or phallic instrument titillation, neither of which is really very hot at all IME.

Anyway, I give you Eliane Radigue:

Just found out about Laurie Spiegel:

And lets finish off with Delia Derbyshire:
