My local vintage synth market is ridiculous, how about yours?

Portland, OR Craigslist:

Moog Concertmate MG-1, $650

Really? This is getting out of control. What would this sell for in your neck of the woods? Even $500 that people are paying for these on Ebay seems ridiculous, especially when you consider the Minitaur is coming out brand new for $599

So much for this statement, from Wikipedia:

"Still, this synthesizer is sought-after as an inexpensive way to get the famed "Moog Bass" sounds."

paid $250 for one last year around here in northern california. it had some gunky sliders and a few missing caps for the sliders but after cleaning it up and replacing the caps i flipped it for $450 on feebay.

i can find a lot of good deals around me and so can you. just because someone is asking crazy high prices doesn't mean they won't take a lot less. offer the guy $300 and let him him know you'll be interested still in a few days and when no one else responds to him with any higher offers he'll get back to you.

craigslist is pretty funny, you either have to offer more than the asking price if it's insanely low or less if it' insanely high. and remember they can always ask what they want, it's a free country. doesn't men the value of gear near you is higher than elsewhere just that you have a few guys hoping for suckers in your area with stuff.

for instance there's a guy around here that periodically lists things on c-list that are pure crap value wise and he looks for trade for vintage gear and wants beyond top dollar value for his stuff and wants to devalue anyone else's gear to rock bottom prices.

case in point he had part of a cmi II system (not even a complete system mind you) listed as part of the things he'd consider for trade. he didn't mention that half of what he had was busted (didn't work period) in his ad. offered him a polymoog for that and cash from him or see if he had something smaller and cheaper range to add to the busted pieces. and eventually he said he'd want my oddyssey AND MS-20 also in a straight trade for a broken pile of cmi stuff. before that he offered me a crappy gem workstation for my oddyssey or polymoog. told him not even remotely interested in his gem or wersi workstations, only interested in the cmi II parts but not interested in his inflated valuation of said items and devaluavtion of mine. whole thing turned into a mess with him getting stupier and more angry in each email as he was now convinced he could get some of my stuff for something of his and i was already done with him.

but that's the beauty and curse of c-list it cost's nothing to send an email...

excellent points all around, nowhere on the post did it say $650 firm, however I have seen mint micrmoogs sell for $800 firm. I guess people constantly inflating the asking price since people are inevitably going to lowball them. makes sense.

The MG-1 is a two VCO analog Moog (for the most part). The ARP Odyessy has 2 VCOs and an LFO and they are going for really crazy prices like $2,000+++.

Here is what an MG-1 can do in very capable hands. Listen closely and it is Moog all the way. Not a Model D but the Moog DNA is there.

Moog Realistic MG 1 - YouTube

Portland is also filled with a lot of hipsters with trust funds who may overpay a bit.

Huh. I thought the mg-1 was 1 VCO like the micromoog. I thought it was basically a Realistic branded micromoog. Guess I was wrong.

Actually the MG-1 is a bit better than the Rogue - independent controls for both VCOs, ring mod, and a polyphonic voice than can be detuned and used a a 3rd VCO. I've always felt they've been underpriced for some time.

Well color me stupid then, I didn't really know jack about synths when I used one briefly in a two-piece thing a couple years ago. My drummer brought it in saying "hey I have this crappy radioshack synth that does some cool sounds". I was definitely able to coax some cool sounds out of it, but I was going to offer his sister-in-law $200 for it, thinking thats how much it was worth. silly me.

I bought my mg1 on ebay in 2003 for $300 plus $30 shipping. They are real moogs. I've owned many moog models and the mg1 is the only on i've never sold.

oh I know they are real Moogs, I just didn't really know what it was at the time. He said it was a moog, but I didn't know for sure what it was. I would pay $300 for one, for sure.

keep in mind, Portland is a relatively cheap city with low cost-of-living. Los Angeles has a lot more money in their music gear economy. Go to any second-hand music store and you will see very little high-end stuff here. Not to say those prices aren't insane, but at least that stuff is there. Everyone is fighting over stuff here because of scarcity.

MG1 is the weakest sounding Moog I've ever owned. Big disappointment for me, but still cool because I paid 200 and flipped it for 550 on ebay. I seriously used the poly section more than anything else... there *is* some good fun to be had there.

Perhaps it's the reverse, the international economic crisis that makes old analogues expensive? People know other will pay even if they are dead poor.
