mixer main outs ---> ???? ----> recording device

what goes between the mixer main outs and before the recording device for those of us with beer budgets.

drawmer 1968 > Drawmer 1961 might cool.

You'll just have to give up drinking for 6-8 months

in all seriousness, I'd delay any additional 2 bus processing until after it's in the DAW/recording device.

Some engineers mix to the 2 bus compression (IOW - slap the compressor on the main outs and listen to that while mixing), but if you're going that route, you'd need some beer++ budget gear. No point in running a great mix through sub-par gear on the way to the recorder.

Apply stuff to the individual tracks or subgroups to taste and do the rest ITB or when it gets mastered.

what you are saying is to take a decent sounding mix, record it back as a stereo track, than clean and process that as the studio mix to be mastered? did the gear guy just tell me to eschew gear

this is when as daw is super handy because you can just record it dry and then bounce it out again to your mixer or any outboard process. you dont have to commit to print at the record stage.

i wouldnt go with a drawmer 196x because of coloration + noise

i would go with the drawmer dl251 as it has a really useful enhancer circuit that brightens the signal with heavy compression so you dont get your hats dropping out when you push the compressor hard (unless you want to). and its a transparent quality compressor. you would have to go for s/h if you only have beer money.

also would be nice to have a parametric eq in the chain, but you cant do that on beer money!

you might like to try an SPL vitalizer.. really great for widening and enhancing.. and cheap (if you can grab a s/h jack version, i got mine for £30)

i was looking at an SPL vitalizer, thanks for the confirmation. i'm not a very good production engineer and anything that can help me without having to work exhaustively ITB is good.

i would like to have a decent final product that i can send out to be professionally mastered. this is my hobby, not my vocation. i don't do tile and i don't mastering, there are highly skilled people who can do that better than i ever could.

Even less than that. Take a decent sounding stereo mix from your board directly into the DAW and send it off to be mastered. If it's not going to go to mastering, use ITB processing to try different compression/EQ and get it to where you like it. Minimize the number of trips in and out of the computer and try to use EQ mainly for cutting ITB rather than boosting.

I remembered - you're now doing Tangerine Dream inspired trance music.

Since I'm stuck here until AAA arrives with new tires, I composed some stuff you can use.

Here you go:

bip - bip - bip - beeep - bip - bip - bip - beeep - bip - bip - bip - beeep - bippity - bippity - bippity - bop (x 1000)

if you're doing it live, make sure you have a very disaffected look on your face and one hand on the filter cutoff knob. Actually turning the knob is optional.

Taking me way back. We've probably just lost 99% of the readers. Where is LX when you need him, not to mention Mr808.

For grins, I'll sometimes go back and read some of those early posts from those forums.

The difference is striking - much more humor, much less bashing. Still the same lame-ass questions about syncing up 303's, etc., but the level of discourse was higher. I guess analog was newer back then.

Let me pull out my modem and dial into the BBS. I think I saw a guy selling one in Dundalk...

DACC is still around
