Boss DR 660/770 Midi Mapping

Does anyone know if the mapping of midi notes corresponds to their position on the pads? For instance, I have an r8 and the instruments are just mapped to random note numbers not corresponding to where they actually are on the pads. I'm trying to use a 660 or a 770 as a stand alone module and program it through ableton rather on the unit itself. This can be done on the r8 but is quite tedious.
