SSL compressor clone

Hi guys

Just looking at a compressor to possibly buy, its an SSL Compressor clone, the guy said he 'think's its a gyraf'...

He sent me some pics..

Would be bit silly to buy if he can't be certain what it actually is right?

It LOOKS the same as this one:

Thanks

You could send the pictures to the folks at Gyraf and ask them about it. But regardless of what they say, it's pretty risky to buy something like that without hearing it or knowing the condition and with no assurance of any way to get a refund if it sucks. Dependng on budget, if it were me I'd get an Alan Smart or a Chameleon Labs from a decent dealer. At least you know there's nothing shady about the deal and you can return it if you don't like it.

if the front panel is to be believed, it's a gyraf (g-ssl)...this one has no sidechain filter and is therefore non-turbo'd, barebones gssl.

that said there's no telling about its condition/build quality as it is a diy project

I mean, I'll take his word its in full working condition, but yeah, I guess I should take a pass without more confirmation..cheers

What about a Chameleonlabs 7802?

Otherwise I was thinking Klark Technique square one seeing as you get 8 comps/gates..But I am presuming a Chameleon labs would be better? This is for EDM, techno etc..

its likely a Gyraf but I wouldnt bother with it - they really need either the Oxford Mod or the sidechain mod to sound right - otherwise they dont deal with bass freq well...well - you could ask if he has the Oxford Mod inside there...the Oxford mod has no control on the front...maybe he could take a pic. I'd only consider it if he is offering you a cheap deal like £350 or something...

Consider the Drawmer 1968 second hand...

Or do a search on eBay. Clones like these appear regularly.

700 notes for a diy SSL clone... hmm i dont think so..
Those things can be built for about £300-£350 less if you diy it yourself.

That looks like GSSL Gyraf clone in Purusha Rack!

i made many GSSLs and they are great DIY starter piece of kit ... also depending on quality of components it can sound great for $$$

value of parts ( quality ones) is around 300Euro to make one decent GSSL!

I sold mine after i made and tried MixBuzz1 ...

I have 2 of this babies and its best bus compressor in DIY area!! ( i think you can make one for 400 euro of parts... IR research sell kit with all parts + rack and front panel that can be found on DIY group white market)

they are kinda upgraded GSSL... but without errors, better grounding, additional ratio, expanded attack release controls, Crash & Blend control and far more !!!

I am thinking of buying an SSL style stereo compressor from someone who builds them to order. Is there anything I should ask for or watch out for. The guy has a good reputation and I have a couple of mates that use comps built by him.*Any advice?*
