Sennheiser HD-25 good for mixing down, production, studio work?

We all know the Senn HD25 and also the Sony 7506 are very popular, industry standard and sounds great among djs; but what about for mix-downs, studio and production??

I want to upgrade, I have been using an old, jank, oily, sweaty, beat up, pair of Sony MDR V6 (similar to 7506) for production/mixing. I really want to try out some Senn's this time. I also want to double them up for dj use (ie: small and compact), just very occasionally though. Not really interested in other suggestions to other brands like akg, audio technica, grado, etc; since i really want my first pair of Senn's. I was really GASing for a used pair of HD-600/650, or maybe even new, but those are more than $100 more than the HD25's and also are too humongous to be double duty as a dj set of phones (not to mention open back?).

..so my choice, I think, I drilled it down to the HD-25.. unless you guys think it is unadvisable for mixing-down, in studio, production work and I shouldn't waste my time on the 25's and get the 600's instead... so I ask for you opinions and insight on my the matter.

I hope the 25's are as good or good enough, as I'm really wanting to go for the 25's instead of the 600's (due to smaller size and dj usage too).

they are good... wouldnt mix on headphones anyway or if i prefer open headphones but the hd 25 quality is fine enough for studio work...actually they was initially ment as studio headphones and not for dj´s.. there was no dj market when they came out.

they are good allrounders.

I've been having the same dilemma, want some new cans for use when on trains/coaches just for sketching stuff out and to double as DJ phones. The HD-25 are the obvious choice as they are compact but the 650s are just pure S.E.X. but they're too big and open back so whoever is next to me on the choo choo is gonna get a whole lot of sound in the ear hole.

I know I should get the 25s........ but..... the 650s are soooo pretty.

Are you going to use monitors and headphones or just headphones?

I like to play and write stuff on headphones but usually when I do the mix I can't get it anywhere near as good as I can with my monitors.

Maybe if you haven't tried some you should!

Monitors too, but monitor only in the final mix-down fine-tuning, switching back and forth from cans to monitors several times (and maybe even diff monitors, etc.).. But, majority, before final mixdown, will be on phones, like sketching, playing, writing, arranging, composing, etc...but I know the most critical stage where audio quality is needed is mixing-down; so the prior steps can really use mediocre phones honestly. But for the most part, mixing down will be a large part 80-90% on cans.. and the very last stage of final mixdown will be a combo of both phones and any monitors around I can check the mix..

For melodies, space effects and arranging, yes. For mixdown, hell no.

Strangely enough, I´m doing 80% of my work on my MacBook´s speakers

I've never used the 25s but I've heard they are great for everything besides mixing. I've heard they are decent and well above average for headphones in terms of mixing. If your primary concern is mixing I would definitely recommend the 600s. I've had them for some time and they get amazing results. But I always cross reference with monitors.

You've heard wrong, then. HD-25 are very good for mixing, and better than HD600 for it. Yes, I've used both for years, so don't bother asking.

I'm guessing it's also genre dependent, some stuff may be easier to mix than other. I've mixed (or rough mixed) years with HD25's, and still can't nail a mix near as good as with monitors. The mix will sound good on headphones and even home speakers, but with studio monitors you'll realize it's not right afterall.

HD25's are fun tho, I haven't tried any better ones either. I love the way they sound and also love them being so closed they'll isolate you from surrounding noises, ie office, travelling.. and vice versa.

The HD-25's are really good DJ headphones, and pretty good for studio work when you need isolation.
Now, I've no idea if the one's I used were fake, if there are indeed any fake models on the market. But the one's I got were terrible for mixing down tracks, it was almost impossible to get good results.
I did get them brand new and for half the price everywhere else was selling them for, which makes my now slightly suspicious, considering other people seem to think they're okay.
The problems I had were, bad dynamics so I couldn't hear slight changes I made, and a very recessed frequency range between about 1k to 10k.
