Yamaha RY30 / RM50 info

There seems to be a lot of sources on the net claiming that the RM50 is a rackmount version of the RY30 (minus the sequencer) along with additional sounds and a few more editing features. Can anyone here confirm if this is indeed correct.

Does the RM50 contain all the sound of the RY30?
Do theses 2 machines sound the same?
Apart from the sequencer, would I be missing out on anything by choosing a RM50 over the RY30?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I've had multiple RY30s and one RM50. Yes, the RM50 is a rack RY30 minus sequencer with added editing. You'd miss out on the control wheel the RY30 has, which is one of its big draws.

Can you edit/sequence the sounds of the RM50 with the RY30's data slider and control wheel via MIDI?

Thanks for the reply.

From what I understand, the control wheel on the RY30 allows the user to adjust various parameters and record the results to the sequencer in realtime. Does the control wheel allow this data to be sent to an external sequencer/DAW?

Are any of the additional sounds in the RM50 those that were only available in card format for the RY30 (similar to the Roland R8 and R8mkII). I have been trying to find a complete voice list for the RM50 but have been unsuccessful so far. Anyone know where I can find one on the net?

Have you read the RM50 manual? It's free on the yamaha site. I believe it is two parts, it should list the samples. I do not believe the extra samples are on the cards. You can still use cards too (both ry30/50 and sy77/99) The midi specs on it are very extensive, and yes you can adjust parameters between notes from a sequencer.

The RM50 has some extra tricks up its sleeve that the ry30 lacks, like lfos, trigger ins and an optional board where you can save your own samples (a remake of it is still available).

It is a great choice for a rack mount drum module unless you want the Roland sounds, in which case R8m or XV synth is the way to go.

What it lacks compared to the ry30 is being able to sit comfortably and program sounds and patterns from your easy chair.

I was curious as from what I understand there were 8 cards released for the RY30:
RSC-3001 Percussion
RSC-3002 FX Drums
RSC-3003 House & Rap?
RSC-3004 Dance & Soul

And the Artist series:?
RSC-3071 (Dave Weckl)
RSC-3072 (Tommy aldridge)
RSC-3073 (Matt Sorum)
RSC-3074 (Peter Erskine)

So none of the sounds from these cards were incorporated into the RM50 as standard?

It appears so. As pointed out by bluegreengold earlier in this thread, there was an optional memory board that could be purchased for the RM50 that allowed the user to add there own samples to the machine. It seems that a version of this upgrade is still available here:

No, I don't believe any of the cards were incorporated into the RM50. You were meant to use the cards with the RM50 too. I've only ever used the two above, and really they are not at all essential. Especially with the sample dump function in the RM50. I have a hazy memory of prefering the sy77 house card over the one in the ry series card for some reason, but it was probably a peculiar one, like a better cowbell or something.

Does anyone know if there is a program available that I can use to edit the RM50? Not that I mind editing from the front panel, but it is rather tedious.

I need some help with the RM50. I'm trying to create my own drum sounds on the unit but the manual says that I need to make a user voice in order to do so. The problem is that no matter what mode I select (preset or internal) the RM50 is not letting me edit anything. I know that the preset voices cannot be edited, but the manual is not clear on how to enable a user voice for editing and it seems like none of the voices can be edited anyway.
