One more point about HD25's. If you live in a smallish flat, no one will hear anything you do unless you use lot's of volume. They are very closed and even someone sitting right next to you will probably hear nothing. Using HD25's at high volumes would probably destroy your ears quickly anyway.

The HD600's have a open, relaxed character, which makes them sound more laid back. They are very easy to listen to (and through, if that makes sense). They are in fact much more transparent and detailed across the spectrum and they reach further at both extremes. With the 600's it's easy to forget you're listening on headphones, also helped by the fact that they are extremely comfortable. I can wear them for hours on end, while the HD25's can get a bit uncomfy after an hour or so. That sounds like I don't like the HD25's but actually I wouldn't want to be without them. They sound great, are good fun to listen to, are detailed/accurate enough, and to answer your question, are absolutely useable for studio/mixdown work. You'll need to learn how they present things but that's true for any headphone. | |

| Sennheisers HD650's
I just had a kid so I cannot track with monitors as my kid sleeps all the time. I had to make a substantial investment into headphones so I picked up some Senn HD 650's. They are ridiculous...best purchase I ever made. You could prob mix down in them and it would till sound good. Highly recommended if you have some coin to invest! They even make 850's but those are 1500 bucks...that's a little out of my price range so I went with the next best.

I have a pair of hd555 's. Sometimes you can find them on the head-fi forums for under $100. They sound really nice for bass and the soundstage is amazing!

If OP is on a short budget, I suggest the Ultrasone DJ-1. Surpringsly decent frequency response and it handles hard kicks pretty nicely. FWIW, I used to produce psytrance with pretty brutal kicks and those cans saved my ass when I was on the road didn't had monitors around. If money is not a problem, Sennheiser HD 650 all the way. Can't go wrong with them. |
