Does Anyone Regret Buying The Tempest?

If so then what is it about the Tempest that let you down?

The Tempest is too much fun. Sounds great too. I can't wait until they have more sequencing options available for my external synths.

Never. I would give everything else away and keep only the Tempest if I had to.

Absolutely no regrets, but some OS-related niggles. Most are being addressed but some cannot, for example recorded knob and FX-slider movements (a la electribe). There is only 4mb of memory on board and this is not enough for such things.

If so, how much do you want to sell it for?

Yes...

Unlike a plugin I can't magically load another one on my table so I can paly with two at the same time.

Massive fail IMO...

But that's valid for every hardware out there.

Luckily it's a lot more cheaper these days so thinking of saving up (maybe even selling the Juno 106 nooooo ) and getting another one..

Just to clarify, you can record fx slider movements into the sequencer on a single-value-per-note basis. You just can't record a sweep of values on one note.

Honestly? Well I packed mine away and was going to send it back to the shop but I decided to gave it another chance. I refuse to be beaten by it.

There are many, many issues, but the main thing for me is not being able to record CC's into the DAW at the moment...don't know why it's taking so long to sort that out.

Would I buy the tempest again if i knew what i know now?

No chance.

Has DSI given any indication that a future OS update could allow users to load their own samples?

Yes they did.

But it's somewhat a long shot because of the performance oriented and OS things they are sorting out.

I am really glad they put it out like this. The input from the community and users as well as Pym's brilliant coding is transforming this machine month by month.

After those urgent things are addressed he will look into easy to implement ways of putting in your own samples.

Again this is not overlooked just post-poned. Don't buy a Tempest hoping it will load samples. Buy it because it's a great great instrument (rather than a simple machine).

I think it's pretty low on the priority list. If it is ever done it would probably be implemented in a very basic way (no editing of waveforms etc) and maybe only swapping of single-cycle waves. But who knows...

Personally I'd like to be able to swap out some single-cycle waves but I won't be super disappointed if it's never added - the Tempest is perfectly fine without user samples IMO. It will never be a sampler like some people would like it to be.

Assume it's not going to happen. Frankly, I hope it doesn't happen and I'm providing that input to DSI when I can. I'd rather they spend their finite engineering resources investing in other features.

Why not get a device designed around that workflow?

I'd buy another one if it could sequence CV.

Biggest issue for me is that the output assignment doesn't work as it should, it seems noone uses more thant 2 outs with this machine...

Because there are no other sample-wielding machines currently on the market that have real analog filters in them.
Because it would make it even more awesome....er.....

If Roger Linn ever decides to proceed with his own version on the new LinnDrum, I hope he at least considers putting some DSI filter chips in there.

Hmm, works fine for me. I haven't tried using all outputs at once but I usually have 4 of them connected.

Well, I usually plug all the outputs of my machines to a patch bay and choose what I want to route and where to route it.
It is impossible for me right now with the Tempest, so I just play with the mains for now, its not really cool cos I would like to use it more than just to add a few sounds to an existing track...
I wait for the next OS to solve that...

No problems here. All outputs work as assigned.

Thanks Yes, that's true. But could be so much better. Hope they change it.

It's my only DSI piece - I was put off by the crappy build quality of their previous gear. A few mis-angled buttons, but overall nothing wobbly and feels very solid.

What do you mean as usual? P08 encoders got you down? My Mopho keyboard, Tetra and Tempest are all high quality construction. The Tempest feels solid, sturdy, good knobs, awesome pads, killer screen. No build quality complaints from me on any DSI gear.

Are you serious? 6 Evolver sound engines in one box and you're spent after 20 minutes?

the Synth part seems very decent but i m not in love with the DSI synth Sound.

I dont want to say this unit is crap or something...
perhaps i was expecting tooo much.

Dont kill me for saying this !

It s not like i spent 200 hours with the tempest already...perhaps i ll change my mind in the future

The presets are poor. You need to learn to synthesize your own drums - then it opens up.

Not convinced about the sound here at all. It's my main concern.

Yes it's a deep machine, yes you have to synthesise your own sounds and it takes time to blend sounds, but I've said this before, I've had the machine for 3 months now and not once been compelled to record it. Says it all.

Saying that, I am giving it another chance to try and work some programmable magic...I hate to be beaten.

i cant get enough Tempest to be honest! Love the sound and bounce..if i set the swing on the Tempest and MPC3000 to the same swing %ages, they swing EXACTLY the same..love using them together! Love the synth engine, sounds better than the P08, its punchy as a synth and drum machine and sounds wide and the workflow for studio and live is immense..i just hope they hurry up and get sequencer midi output going soon and cc reading/outputting also the playlist function...but i must be patient!! As it stands, best purchase ive made in a long time..
