Thread Starter | Which classic synth has this feature...
I used to have a Nord Lead and absolutely loved it for making deep basses. I'd start with a saw on one oscillator, then bring up another oscillator an octave below it, probably a saw or square on that one. Then I'd engage the Unison button for some MONSTER basses. I've only got a J106 and a DX7 at the moment. I'm looking for a classic analog synth that I can do basically the same thing on. What are my options without spending too much? Something from the mid-late 80s I'm guessing. |

Any polysynth with more than one osc and an unison setting can do this (=most). One that does it very well is the Roland MKS-80. It is from the 80ies, and the VCOs in unison sound very big. It has a "unison detune" feature as well to spread the tone to taste.

I'm taking a look right now. I'm looking at the JX-3P, JX-8P, Super JX-10, and the MKS-70. I didn't see the actual UNISON feature on any of those, but they do seem to have multiple oscillators. I'd like to get a list of them and see which one tickles my fancy the most. Looking at the Vintage Synth timeline right now...

I was listening to this track here: And realized it's kind of like the basses I used to make on my NL2. Sounds like what I said earlier, an oscillator with one an octave below, unison engaged. I'd like to be able to do it again but on a real analog synth. I wonder what they used in that track above... |

Well in the track I posted above, that's basically what I want to do. It's pretty much the same I did on my NL2. If I can get the stuff like in the track above I'm happy. I wonder which synth they did that on, seeing as it came out in 1989. Hmm...

As an owner of a JX-3P, I can tell you that it does not have unison, but it still can create detuned sounds. It doesn't have a mono mode either.

| the Juno 106 in Unison with a Saw and the Sub Osc engaged make my house shake. to get that percussive bass sound, you need fast envelopes, so, yeah, buy another Nord and call it a day.

the Akai AX60 is only one VCO, but it is six voices, and does have unison. the filter is not as strong as my Moogs, or Yamaha CS, but in unison it does alright. it was my only analog board for a while, so it held bass duties, and had no trouble stepping to the task...

Definitely the MKS80.. Rattle the dishes and knock pictures off of the wall. The SH5 will do it too.

The Sequential Circuits Six-Trak has a truly huge-sounding unison mode and another two stack slots which can hold mono-layers composed of up to six different patches each. Sampling these stacks can serve as a great basis for truly massive pads.
