Who is over 36 and still going to clubs?

After going to an Verboten(NYC) event yesterday, realizating how little I enjoy the same bum! techno music again and again (and it was nobody else than DJ Hell), I wonder how many of you in th farthers age still go to parties like that and have the same fun what he had 10-15 years before. Aside from socializing aspects, which are rather put down by the loudness level (and the bass was stronger than usual). It was kinda lame. There is nothing new to discover in these kind of techno events. And the whole principle of pushing the faders to EQ-out the bass and put it back ("whooohooo!") is so lame ... that I have to ask myself if thats New Yorks best attempt to present techno. Same thing happened two weeks ago when Garnier was here. Same Brooklyn instrustrial flavor, somehow I would prefer some snobish high society club but which gives the music some new athmosphere. Getting old means to see that all from a distant eye and not really getting into it, or what is your experience?

I am 35... and no longer live near real clubbing or raving venues.

I would like to say though that after experiencing electronic music for 15+ years your tastes change. When "we were young" EDM was all new to us.. exciting... sometimes it didn't matter what kind of music was playing as long as it was loud, and as long as we knew we owned the venue, knew more than anyone else, and were still going to take over the world.

As with everything in life, hobbies, career, work, taste in foods, relationships...we grow. The same old thing that excited us when it was new now bores us. We look for more diverse or complex or different things that will capture our interest and interest our intelligence. When you're 6, hot dogs are the best thing in the world. When you're 36, not so much. So, either find a way to get in the groove, or go look for a more suitable meal to satisfy your soul...

I'd go if it were music I'd love (mostly big beat and other EDM from the late 90s).

I went to see the Chemical Brothers' movie on Friday night- couldn't keep still for the whole show and found it very hard to stay sitting down (and wipe the grin off my face!).

It made me realise that I could still go clubbing if I found the right scene and that I really need to go to a Chemical Brothers show (sadly I saw their disappointing Glastonbury 2000 performance and was a bit put off, despite absolutely loving their music).

I'm 39, by the way...

As a DJ and party promoter (I'm 27) I have many friends around 35-36is that still go out on the regular. I do notice that after that age there is a pretty sharp drop off. The average man's lifestyle at that age (wife, kids, real job) doesn't really lend itself to regular partying of that nature.

It sounds like you took a break from going out for a while and just aren't into what's currently happening musically. I'm guessing DJ Hell was the reason you went to Verboten last night (as opposed to seeing Kate Simko or Richy Ahmed who were also o the bill) as he's fairly old school. I was surprised they booked him actually.

With that said I was the opening DJ for Verboten's last party (the one before DJ Hell in Jan with Jamie Jones and Lee Foss) sorry you weren't digging the music :p

Well Hell ain't what he used to be, what were you expecting? I still enjoy clubbing a lot and I'm 38, years ago I used to go to everything, now I'm way more selective. Then again banging techno would not be my first choice unless its really good, next week I'm going to see Objekt and Lando Kal for example. I got over the "being the oldest one there" thing, who cares. The younger generation need us anyway.

Im not over 36 but im quite active in the nyc scene, always checking out many different parties, promoters, venues and everybody from the top tier international DJs old, new to the NYC local underground. I gotta say its really hit or miss, even when top talent is involved. Right now feels like an especially difficult period, with plenty of talent coming throigh but the parties remain lackluster and provide an overall easily forgettable experience. Why this is i cannot exactly say, but id encourage all old heads out there to keep the faith and experiment w different venues promoters and continue to support the DJs and producers who have inspired so much in the scene. You will find what youre looking for, it can just be difficult the way things stand right now ... Its getting harder and harder even for me, a relative newcomer, to find satisfaction in the music and overall party experience. I do recommend the Lee Burridge "all day i dream" parties; fantastic vibe, music, people, 3-10 pm on a sunday held at a large bushwick warehouse.

Just depends on your situation really. If you got a wife, kids, ect.. You probably won't go out as much. Not to say that you can't, though. I see "older" people in the clubs all the time, nothing wrong.

I used to love just dancing for hours (entire weekends even), but haven't done that for several years. There are many reasons:

- back then I was younger
- the scene was new to me, exciting
- it was genuinely a very happening scene back then
- partying from Friday to Sunday was routine
- I was mostly hanging with some very hedonistic friends
- I was invariably buzzing
- I became obsessed by the music

Nowadays, only the last point remains: I'm still obsessed by EDM music, but when I've been to parties that actually play the music I like I have a good dance for an hour or so before retiring for a beer, wondering how it's possible that people can talk to each other when it's so loud.

Back in the old days I barely talked to anyone, I was too busy buzzing and dancing I think when we did talk to each other it must have been incoherent babble along the lines (ahem) of "where...where...who...what?...yeah....yeah!...alright....nice!...****ing tune!...what?..."

i'm 40. i'll go out once in a while to a club but usually it's for someone i know who's playing or someone is in town worth going to hear. but i don't go and just hang out it because it's saturday night or something.

i haven't been to a club in a long time that was that kind of place where the same people just show up every weekend regardless of who is playing. do those clubs still exist? you know.. the ones where it's like a family get together every weekend?

i'd rather spend my time hanging out with friends at a BBQ or dinner or weekly/monthly event in a bar that plays good music.

I think I missed the first DJ. Kate wasnt bad, slow start but then became better.
Music wise it was ok. Sometimes she was more smiling than performing.
I didn't mean that Hell was bad or something, not at all, he played the dancable stuff.
The other room was ok, too. It was just not "the same thing" where you get overexcited.

J Gabriel is definitely right on this one. The "All Day I Dream" parties are probably the best thing happening in NYC right now (for house and techno that is) The really special ones are in the summer when they do them on the rooftop.

Lee is an old pro and has been DJing almost as long as I've been alive, so he really knows how to set a vibe with the music and decor. They also bring an incredible D&B sound system so you all can dork out on that.

got it!

I started Northern Soul allnighters when I was around fifteen....by my twenties I was going to 3 or 4 clubs a week....by 26 I was sick of it, lost a few friends to drugs, the music was changing (again) even started to get dodgy knees from jumping up and down, it was time to stop
