I was at the DJ Hell party too and it was outstandingly boring (like 87% of NY parties these days). The whole thing was just off.

Like so many other parties in the same scene, the general lack of risk taking, the self-satisfied culture of blah, and the professionalization of it all are all insufferable enough to make me want to stay home most of the time too. That said, I can still have a night that restores my faith in humanity every now and then. There is some interesting music still being played in NY, it's just few and far between and definitely not coming from the Techno camp. That's what Detroit during DEMF is partially for

I'm almost 30 and plan to rave to the grave if it's still interesting.

it's annoying too when they give you crap for a little spliff, definitely more of an underground guy myself...all the designer drugs and whatnot i can do without, i might be very accepting if a fun guy happened to show up while grooving out in the forest/desert ehe

The problem is more getting some (non music involved people) to join me as, like i said, most people i DO know are performing.

Because techno is so 'mainstream' here likely the clubs in the center are swarmed with students who don't care what kind of music is being played which for someone who remembers time people where looking forward week(s) to a certain party is a bit sad to see.

One other club here with a more 'adultish' (end 20's mainly) crowd. But also a sort of single-matchmaking-environment (little to risky for an involved guy especially with the forward girls nowadays. If you say you have a girlfriend the respond with 'yeah. so?').

But most importantly i think in the techno scene there is not that much happening. A lot of Berlin style nights (or even label night) which even in the best club is not feeling like the real thing.
So, going to Berlin a few times a year to party is not the worst thing to do. The scene feels much more complete there. And if it's happening somewhere, it's there (especially for the music i make myself
Yeah same here...the clubs are mostly students and it's more a hook up singles dating party. Pretty much the place all the good looking girls hang out at. No one cares about the music as long as the girls are making out, humping each other and drinks are spilling everywhere.

they can be a compenstion.

I noticed how many guys were trying to chase every girl, something I have never seen on a techno event,
more in a village disco.

thats probably why so many girls are attending the party..

no joking.. they go their to see krollox and lured in the trap the male specimen can hunt them better...therefor they are all big krollox fans too..regardless that his looks dont appeal to them as much as to the girls.

something like that or the other way around.

I'm 43 and last year I took my girlfriend to Roseland to go see Armin. Paid my $90 in advance only to find out that the tickets at the door were $80. We got there at 10:30-11:00pm. I think the guy who opened for Armin was playing a pre-mixed set because I never saw him go to the head phones to check a cue. Armin came on around 12:30 and we were out the door around 1:30am.

All I kept thinking was, damn I'm getting to old for this...LOL. All I saw around me were kids passing out from drinking and drugs, trying to dance but all they did was jump up and down. I don't recall that being the norm when I use to go see Little Louie or Roman Ricardo at Studio 54. And every time I saw Armin or the opening DJ jump around, I couldn't help but smirk thinking, yeah try jumping around like that spinning vinyl back in the day.

I think I can handle going to a club maybe 1 night every 2 months or so but not more than that.

I am 39 and go to shows at clubs to see bands, etc. Not in the SNL "Baby don't hurt me" sense with loud music and I can't stand and chicks who would never give me the time of day.....unless it's me playing
I'd rather play chess at a coffee shoppe with some good conversation.
Damn I'm old!

i love listening to his stuff but in a club/gig setting it doesnt really do it for me

whereas someone like muse is an assault on your senses even though I far prefer Bonobo's music

kinda like going to the cinema for a blockbuster even though you prefer the independent movie at home, its just as satisfying watching the blockbuster sometimes

if that makes sense

Sports are one of the reasons I can't stay out late. I have a weekly Saturday/Sunday morning golf group that I wake up at 5:00 am to play with (I walk the course and carry my clubs btw).

The point is, electronic music doesn't need to be in a club to be enjoyed. While I do enjoy going out dancing, it doesn't hold a candle to enjoying music with a small group of friends in the comfort of one's home. In my opinion anyways.

Logo you hit the nail on the head. The techno scene here is pretty blah, the best I've seen in the last few years were when Derrick may or Jeff Mills came to the sleepy and boo events. better music, better people who actually are there for the music, not because it's the place to be.

I think one of the problems is that the gay scene here is to seperated from the 'straight' scene. And i can't blame the gays. God knows that a few hedonistic gays can really turn an average party from 'meh' to 'best night evaaaah"

Well, I need the bass frequencies to hit me and shake me. Nothing what a home environment can deliver.

And i'm sure there is some sociologist who can explain about the tribal aspects of dancing in a group and the advanced mating rituals we silly humans have developed.

37.

I still go once in awhile if it's someone from out of town that I really, really, really want to see. But very rarely. My wife has no problem with it if it's something I'm really excited about and her and the boy are always in bed by 10.

Being married and with a young son is obviously a big part of it but proximity helps too. Being 30 minutes from downtown by car in the suburbs certainly squashes the urge. When I lived downtown, especially when I was single, I went to things all the time. 3-4 nights a week. Usually friend's nights or to see a headliner but sometimes on the weekend after my radio show I'd go to afterhours for a few hours just for the hell of it.

If I was single, downtown, I would still go out a ton. What's the point of sitting at home all the time?

Social aspect of it started to drop off after I hit 30 or so. Almost everybody over 30 is at something because they are running it, playing at it or networking. I had nothing to sell, no agenda, so there was no real reason to be there as I didn't feel like running around chatting up 18 and 20 year old kids. I don't need new friends. Maybe if I actually release a few records and people actually like them then I'll feel like I have to go out.

For me it also slowed down also a few years ago after four years in a row of going to DEMF and its afterparties followed by MUTEK back to back. It's tough to go to a bunch of really great parties, see a lot of really great people then come back to club nights that either sound like crap or have hardly any people at them. And it's expensive. My wife and I clubbed a bit while in Amsterdam and Berlin on Honeymoon and went to Dance Valley but that was 5 years ago almost already and if we went back over there I'm not sure I'd go out as much anymore either.

I don't regret it. From 14 to 31 I partied my friggin can off with hundreds of overnight parties and plenty of sleepless weekends. I'm good, I've had my fill.

Children

They don't care when you go to bed....they get up at the same time.

Just thinking about a club makes me want to go have a lie down.

I would like to see jmj and his laser harp one day.

I (35) still go regularly (not that much anymore) to clubs. But it's more for networking. If the vibe is good, I stay until 5-6 am, or I'm out 2-3 am.

But dancing and partying all night long, freaking out on the stage, getting undressed because you sweat like hell... that hasn't happened for years I think these times are over for me. I leave the stage to the youngsters. But still I can enjoy a good party, talking, drinking, a little shaking, a little flirting...
