Frequency scanning?

Does anyone do this on your EQs on a regular basis (by regular basis I mean "every" sound? Where you set up a notch and scan for unwanted sounds within your EQ parameter and then dip the unwanted frequency?

anyone do this all the time? if not when do you put on this practice?

btw, sorry for the bad english Im heading to an early gig and Im american

Frequency scanning?

Usually I only use that method when there is something I don't like about the sound and there is no other way to change it. I don't use it for every sound because if it already sounds good then it sounds good.

I'll use the same method durin mixdown when I'm tryin to fit seperate parts together. It helps to understand where each stem's frequency spectrum is. This helps to determine if two stems clash at the same frequency. When that happens I remove it from one sound and sometimes boost in the other.

These are all very common practices and most mixing books will have an in depth look into it.

ok that makes sense. thanks. Do you always dip certain frequency ranges to make room for others? For instance, lately I dip mostly all of my sounds at about 200hz so my snare will cut through better?

Mostly for resonant peaks that are annoying and they require some surgical procedures (these ringing sounds are obvious). Not all sounds need eq (at least not more than maybe some low and high cut.

That's definately a good way to get your snare to cut through. I almost always dip the frequencies if I'm trying to get another part to stand out. Your on the right track. The most important aspect is to make sure it sounds good after you EQ.
