February 2012 New Gear Thread

wow, opening the monthly new gear thread. haven't done that in a while, but i was so extatic about my new dark synthesis object of desire, that i just had to..

its a Roland System100, model 101. my bandmate owned this, then my friend Roginator called me he's selling his MS-20.. and i suggested to my bandmate it might serve him better for what he does (fx, noise, patching, processing ext audio) and that i could take his Roland and ... voila!!

novelty isn't there as i used this board so many times, but still i'm happy its finally mine. love the diode ladder on this thing.. it habitates ara between EMS and 303 sonically. and absolutely huge vco, biggest Roland ever made. after JP8, my fav Roland bar none.

Nice clusterchord! Going to add an expander or any of the other modules?

Pretty slutty month for me, though some of this software was in late January I guess.

I actually already had one of these that I bought on eBay while I was on the waiting list to be able to order one directly. So the new one has various options including the 4 jack option (can insert my ARP 2600 or modular or Ebbe und Flut or another pedal in between the two sides of the pedal), mode toggle switch, higher gain option, etc.

McDSP Ultimate Compressor 6030

Upgrade from SSD3.

Ultimate rolling rack

Fxpansion Tremor was cheap ($99) for owners of their other stuff.

Upgrade from Ozone 4.

I also preordered an Arturia Minibrute but no idea when those start shipping. And still waiting on my Solaris.

It's a dual mono compressor so can be used for bus compression as well as individual instruments and such. Very flexible (switchable feedback/feedforward, built-in parallel compression via the blend knob, can add 2nd harmonic distortion with a knob, switchable hard/soft knee, sidechaining, peak or RMS modes, and filters to control the blending, the sidechaining, etc.)

Alta Moda Unicomp

This is my first outboard compressor. I'm still planning to get a Slate Dragon as well. That should cover my OTB compression needs quite well unless Mpressor G.A.S. gets me in the end.

hesus.. 4 grand . seems like a (high end) swiss knife for 2-bus, with blend function, hpf and all.. im still not in position to invest to such a level n outboard. and in addition, when i have cpl of grand, i blow it on a polyanalog... again.. even tho i absolutely dont need it.. idiot. need to change that frame of mind and finally invest in a small stem console, few comps etc.

yeah, i stepped back from total euro GAS mode (want everything ) for a sec, and took a good look at what i really needed out of this system, that i don't already have. and figured out that besides powering Expert Sleepers, it could serve as an ultimate expansion for the System100. sorta like System102 "on steroids"..

so my plan is to add AM Synth 8005 - also a diode ladder but multimode an SH5 clone design. since SH5 and Sys101 share a lot of common chromosoms, i figured this is logical route for expansion. then i would add a VCO, so i can use it as second one, for detuning, osc sync and xmod (fm). another envelope, and ring mod. together they will be one helluva combination.

AM8005

can't wait..

Hey I`m on verge of ordering a TIPTOP Happy ending kit to start of my modular craze... If you could only start with ONE module (I know but money is a bitch, and If I buy the kit now I will be forced to buy more modules later ) I guess something like a filter would be it? Would I need an input module of some sort?

My goal for the euro is to be a chunky monosynth and fx-station. I want something that sounds different from my digital tools!

if its primarily for processing, id at least add an envelope follower to that filter, and something that can modulate this filter... an LFO that can go into audio range so you can do some crazy fm-ing, with sidebands etc.

.... I just ordered a new Dotcom-22 cabinet to go across the top of my modular (pictured in my avatar). This will give me a spot for a couple of new modules I just bought, along with space to put some older modules back in the rig that I had to take out when I got those Hordijk modules... Pictures in a week or two once it all gets here & I get it configured...

If I calculated correctly, I should still be able to reach the knobs on the modules in the new top row....

M-Audio Axiom Pro 25 - to have in the couch and in the suitcase. Had a M-Audio Axiom 25 before (not the Pro model) but it was stolen.

Bought something "small".

Roginator is getting a free dinner for finding it out for me.

That's all for today's Press Release.

Bye now!

That's a beauty, clusterchord! Congratulations!

I was going to buy RME HDSP 9632 soundcard with AEB 4-I expansion card within a bundle offer for 50% discount! Waited for too long, they were sold out. :-(

Well, that's list price. At Vintage King it's $3650, but I picked up a minty used one on eBay for about 1/3rd off. And I know what you mean about always blowing money on more synths, it's really easy to do! But I've been methodically working on the rest of the stuff in my studio, like a great interface/converters (ULN-8, LIO-8), great outboard effects (Bricasti M7, Axe-Fx 2, Kurzweil Rumour, Schippmann Ebbe und Flut, Mutronics Mutator, analog guitar pedals, etc.), great preamps (ULN8, Pacifica, REDDI), great line mixers for the synths (2x Speck X.Sum), great monitoring (Barefoot MM27s), etc.

What I didn't have was a high quality compressor. I think between the Unicomp and a Slate Dragon I should be in good shape there. I'm not planning to go OTB for things like EQs, but my recording chain is in place and matches the quality of my sound sources (the yummy yummy synths) and I felt that hardware compressors were the last missing piece.

Now I can go back to buying synths!

(Er, after I get the Slate Dragon. And if an Mpressor shows up on eBay at a great price, well...)

Avoid trying out an api 550a with your synths then...

Nice one, matey! I also read that thread. From what I could gather the Midiverb II has the most usable presets which were used in many released productions. The III and later Quadraverb are apparently more programmable but lack those special presets which made the II popular.

For me, I am slowly moving from synths to audio processing...meaning one of my Febuary hunts will shortly result in this:

perhaps I should be looking for a good EQ though since all I use is Ableton's EQ 8 LOL

Here's what I bought, and is currently in Zagreb (Croatia) waiting for me to be picked up:

It's not this particular model from the picture. I'll post pictures when I pick it up (probably end of February). Got it for 400 euros. Not bad. Needs battery replacement, but that's about it!

I haven't put it through its paces yet, though I really like the other McDSP plugins I have. Note that it requires Pro Tools or AU. There is no VST version. There's some discussion of it here on Gearslutz and some reviews running around the web.

Here's a pretty in-depth video review:

those are my favorite EQ & compressor plugs. (well i would say i put them on par with logics plugs which i also love). They hardly eat up any ram or CPU and I find them to be very EQ-eee and Compressor-eee....

I have pretty much all of the waves stuff, soundtoys, as well as ozone (which I use when "mastering" a final mix) and I'll usually use 3-4 waves EQs just to spice things up and an ableton eq 8 on every channel. Same with compressors. Then I use the fancy stuff (meaning Ozone and the nicer waves limiter) on the final mixdown just to give it some edge.. really though it doesn't matter... i think if you gave me a $150 EQ from some old guys garage I could do relatively the same.

Those plugins do look really nice... knowing i'll probably never have my own lunchbox (not practical) I definitely see the appeal, but I already have all the eqs and compressors i really need. Until something radical comes out I'm probably just going to sit back and say "looks neat" to just about everything new that is released that has to do with EQ or Compression.

The more I hear about this board, the more my interest gathers. A nice contrast to your other instruments ED. Congrats!
