Prophet 08 PE upgrade

Hi there

Any of you European Slutz upgraded your Prophet o8 to the pot edition?

Where did you buy the kit from? Can you only get it from Dave Smith in the States?

I ordered mine directly from DSI. My P'08 was one of the first, so it needed one of the surface mount resistors to be removed also. The upgrade is quite simple to do with the instructions.

I ordered my PE rack kit directly from DSI. I was lucky in that i didn't need to solder anything.. those parts are super tiny, so you need to be pretty good with the soldering iron if you have a board that needs to have the little resistor removed.

The upgrade is totally worth it though.. feels like having a new synth

I ordered directly from DSI, but unfortunately I had an early model requiring the soldering - and I mucked it up (they are VERY small parts on the board) so ended up sending to DSI - they fixed my mistake and were very quick in getting the board back to me.

My encoders were horrible, but the PE mod makes this a totally different synth - it's great now and finally feels "right". I don't know why I waited so long to get it done.

regarding dsi 'upgrade'

indeed the original encoders sucked---but pots are NOT the only solution.
for LESS $$$ dsi can replace the boards with dtent encoders-- these are great -- one click per numerical change--- way accurate. Its on their website , but not as obvious as the Pot mod. pots are NOT even the best controls for some of those functions. I would call the new pots to be a control 'option', but the detents are a real 'upgrade'. I just cant believe they cheaped out and didnt use these from the get go.

I dunno about encoders.. With pots i can feel where i am in the data range without having to look at the display, it's much more direct. Encoders feel more indirect to me.. i mean you're turning it and wondering 'am i at the top of the filter range yet?', and then you have to look at the display to confirm it, whereas with a pot you just turn it all the way up in a microsecond and you're done..

I dunno .. i couldn't get used to the encoders on my P08, even when they were still working.. they feel like there's an extra layer between you and the synth. Besides that you had to spin the knobs several turns to get the full range of anything, which doesn't really make life of a knob twiddler easy.

So gimme old fashioned pots anytime
