New Orbital on the way!

The new Orbital album Wonky is coming out in April - I just watched the video for their new track Never and I've got to say it sounds better than some of the filler they put out before their hiatus.

Apparently this video first came out in October, but it's the first time I've heard it and it's actually got me excited to hear new material from them - it sounds like they're on the way to something better than their last outing.

So they're back working together as Orbital? Did they ever stop or did I just imagine that period?! Cool video. Reminds me of a video I made for one of the modules as part of a music tech HND in college. it was even partly filmed in the same places - over Queen Elizabeth II bridge (or Thurrock bridge as it's known commonly) and through Dartford Tunnel. I'll post it up later I think

Back in the day we used to listen to Orbital while travelling along motorways like this on the way to free raves and techno nights in Birmingham like the House of God and Atomic Jam at Que Club what a time.

This track brings me back to those halcyon days. Thank you orbital for some of the best nights of my life.

I should definitely be there in London for the tour.

Apparently there's a lot of DSI tempest on this new album.

Is it really possible that this video has only 3 views?! Please everyone check out Orbital's in studio vids, they've got some interesting techniques for plotting out the progression of the album.

I don't know why, but a similar thread in one of the biggest communities for modern electronic music (WATMM), is full of negative comments for this track...

Their latest and fine "Blue Album" was generally considered as their worst album when it came out...go figure...

Am I the only one whose hugely disappointed by this song? Yes, its ok, sure, but its Orbital for christ's sake. Not saying I'm unsurprised, but this track is more along the lines of "pretty good" rather than absolutely ****ing incredible, like some of their earlier stuff. I was so excited to listen to this, really...

Bands get back together for a reason - because their band members have become utterly broke. Same with the pixies and many other examples...

The only Orbital track that I've ever got really excited by was Chime. Never really floated my boat beyond that.

They stopped producing and touring due to "Family Commitments". I think they have decided to start working again because their kids have grown up enough that they feel its the right time to get back into it.

I may of course be talking out of my arse, if I ever get to interview them I'll ask.

I remember them when they were really cool... (to me at least), I was really into "In sides" as a teenager and liked how lively and organic it sounded - not just plastic synths. I lost my interest rather quickly afterwards and this new one doesn't seem to have some extra power or being innovative and imaginative. I wonder if the same will happen with Boards of Canada - a long hiatus and falling from grace and loosing their originality and imagination when returning... ?

Too bad...

Well, obviously, the only people who know why they got back together are them - hopefully my suspicion is wrong. You'd think that they could have written the odd tune via email the way Autechre do, but maybe they just wanted to take a break.

Anyway, I'm just disappointed because I'm a huge Orbital fan and this tune, while well produced, just sounds a bit trite and poppy to me. I'd love to hear them doing something dark and intricate like some of the tracks on Insides. Hopefully this track isn't representative of the whole album.

Come on... it's not that bad! It's a great Orbital song! Also, I love their "post - In Sides" albums...

Well, ok... I was a bit dissapointed that THAT is what they come up with after all these years. Seemed rather generic at a first listen.

Their sound was kind of retro-hip and fresh in the mid-90's, and there were moments where you asked yourself - where did that sound come from or how did they do that, etc.? I didn't consider them "electronica", just good and interesting music, especially suited for long car drives...

Maybe I (we all) matured or they really didn't come back with a really convincing song and any fresh sounds.

I got a feeling that any a bit more talented kid with VSTis can do similar stuff nowadays.

But maybe the whole album will be better, I agree, let's have more faith.

In the meantime let's refresh a memory a bit - it still sounds retro-cool:

Ah shit, I have to go download this now, my girlfriend from back then left with OUR copy of a limited edition "In Sides".

I'm also a huge orbital fan, but I have to say I really liked it. Its far better than anything on the blue album IMHO, it certainly grabbed me on an emotional level. I also like their "The gun is good" track from a couple of years ago.

Saw them at Glastonbury in 2010 when Matt Smith appeared on stage for the Dr Who theme song and the whole set was amazing. They still get a festival crowd going mental, even ones who are too young to remember them first time round.

Orbital became an established act, for better or worse.

When that happens a lot of rules and motivations change that are foreign to people like us; we can only guess

Well, the two tracks I've heard here are better than most of the pap on the Blue Album (except for Acid Pants), but it doesn't have that edge.

My opinion? Orbital softened up after their sojourns into soundtracks, and it might take them a while to recalibrate with the fanbase who like their output up till 'In Sides'. But they are still an amazing live act, as I found out at a gig in Leeds a couple of years ago.
