Following this logic not any single synth will never quite sound like any other synth. Lots of sounds will sound similar enough for one's needs though, regardless of the actual synthesis behind...everything else is for synth freaks, not musicians...

True, but the question asked was not "sound like".
The question was "cover similar ground" and "soft synth".

Granted, there is a hardware requirement for the Capy 320,
but if someone is more comfortable using a large display
for editing, then I guess it could be comparable.

Some academic definitions do say FM is additive in the sense that you start with a sine wave and through synthesis you add harmonics to create a more complex waveform. As opposed to subtractive, where you start with a complex waveform, and remove harmonics to create a simpler waveform. Of course, in the real world application of the terms, FM does not equal additive.

And on a very non-academic point the converters in the S1000 were shit - 'where's the bass end gone?'.
