Finally! The andromeda... She is MINE

Finally made the plunge and picked up an Andy off eBay. The seller was a fellow gearslutz member (thanks again andrew if youre reading), so needless to say it's in excellent condition! It was so much bigger and heavier than I imagined.

Was going to buy a new moog voyager (£2300) until I realised that was just about enough for an Andy... No contest really

Totally blown away by it's sound.. And matched with the massive modulation possibilities I think I'm going to get along extremely well with this baby! If this turns out to be my last post it's because the a6 has eaten me.

Don't forget to go to wohmart.com\a6, I believe it's called, the site with all the online resources for the A6.

Remember to switch off back ground tuning and temp tuning.

To be honest, it is worth it to keep temp tuning on and just use modulations to give a little bit of drift to the oscillators. When I first got the Andy, I switched both off, but after about a week with it, you start to realize that after hours of extended playing on the Andy, you're fiddling with the oscillators to get them tuned properly because of the internal heat and the temperature in the room. It gets annoying. Background tuning should definitely be turned off though.

I think it's definitely worth it to switch off background tuning. Made a big difference to the sound for me. The temperature tuning is probably worth leaving on.. you are right. Good to experiment though.

Fair enough, my room is incredibly warm so that probably is 65% of my issue right there... at least I hope

How much did you pay for it? Is it that red one on eBay?

Hi guys. Only just heard of background tuning now. What exactly does it do that's so bad it needs to be turned off?

Keeps the VCOs/VCFs/ENVs locked into computer generated pinpoint precision. It's still not perfect, but if you look back through Google sites from like 2002, people were hating on it for sounding too 'digital' because of this background tuning function. It does sound warmer without it on simply because it makes everything a little less accurate. Sounds a little backwards doesn't it

From now on, your Andromeda should be stable in pitch after the board reaches the "average" temperature to which you calibrated voltages of each voice and filter. Once about a month you can do the Auto Tune routine.
This is a post from Don a few years back

Also from don:

Andromeda has two tuning routines that are used to maintain the correct pitch. Background tune and Temperature tune. The background one tunes all the oscillators all the time making sure each stays in perfect pitch which can result in a little bit sterile sound. Best when disabled.

The temperature tuning will make sure your Andromeda stays on 440Hz at A4 as it compensates change in pitch during temperature change. This tuning should be enabled as it will take care that Andromeda is in tune with the rest of your synths.

For the most FAT sound, you can disable both tunings. You can even use the AUX output as it goes directly from the VCAs signal path. To use Andromeda without any tuning options, first turn it on, wait 40 minutes (to ensure regulators heat the PCB board) then start the Autotune routine. This will calibrate all the oscillators at the "average" temperature. From that time on, you can use Andromeda without any tuning options, as long as it heats up to "average" temperature and all the oscillators will be within tolerated pitch offset, yet FAT sounding.

All in all GREAT sounding synth when you disable the tunings. Has that "surgical" precise sound, yet FAT at the same time. And no coloring at all which makes it really exotic sounding as opposed to OB-X, JP-8 or P-5.

Congrats, despite some criticism Andromeda IS great synth and probably the best modern analogue that is not clone of some older designs.

warm it up for at least a good 30-40 minutes do the auto tune and then turn off all the tuning + lower the mix levels in each stage and turn down the master levels in the envelopes = instant win on the Andromeda

I've seen some criticism of its looks in the past but I just can't get on board with it - the Andy's a damn cool looking synth, with all those knob solar systems.
