Frequencies in producing music

When i make (dance) music and play drums or sounds over eachother, is it most important thing that they are in different frequenties?
I know that panning, fx and volume is also important but is frequency the most important rule?

Thnx!

for example if you have two sounds rich in low frequencies, choose your main one and apply lowpass filter to the other one when they play together...
