Hardware Synths That Can Load User Single Cycle Waveforms?

Hi all,

Just trying to get a more comprehensive understanding of which hardware synths allow you to load your own single cycle waveforms for the oscillators, and how many? I know the DSI Evolver has space for about 30. Wish they had incorporated a similar feature on the Tempest. Seems like the UW versions of the Elektron gear can take a crapload, about 8000. I think Shruthi-1 can too but not sure how many. What else? Thanks!

As far as Elektron gear goes, you'd be happier doing the single-cycle thing with either a Monomachine MKII or an OctaTrack. I've done this with the latter and it is quite glorious. Definitely impossible to be disappointed!

Any sampler allows this. A Korg DSS-1 even allows you to draw it with a slider (and with a memory upgrade there's enough room, plus hey, analog filters). A Nord Wave is another candidate and probably the best modern choice if you want synth-style controls.

The Waldorf wavetable synths allow importing single cycles as part of a wavetable, though this is not an obvious process (and all waves in the table are symmetrical).

Loading is not the problem. Convenience is. Use the right tool for the right job .

Edit: DSI Evolver can do it as well, I think.

Blacet Miniwave/Wiard Waveform City modules. Wiard even has a nice app to design your waves on. I generated several hundred waves with this app and sampled them into my Akai S6000. Works great. Also mentioned DSS-1 is an awesome choice too. I have one of these with the custom 16Mb upgrade board and love it. That is until I have to physically move it...

Casio FZ-1 has wave drawing functionality too.

synths: spectralis, waldorf microwave 1 (allows user-waves), blofeld can load samples with the upgrade, Nord wave, op-1, korg microsampler, Electribe ES/x & yes all samplers with keygroups are your friend: emu akai, Vsynth, and of coarse mpc´s & octatrack via pitch-shifts can be used the same way..

I think The Yamaha TG500 or SY85 with a SYEMB06 memory expansion can - but only about 64 or so...

The Yamaha SY85 can load 3.5MB of user samples. The Kawai K3 has a feature for generating a custom additive waveform (1 per patch bank). The Emu Emax SE had a similar additive wave generator. The Casio FZ-1 had an Additive wave generator in addition to wave drawing but it's waves all sounded the same no matter how you set it.

single cycle waveforms are way out of date JFYI. you can get better results with long samples.

Only out of date for emulating acoustic or electric instruments, not for anything else.

Depends on what you are going for, and the term "better" is subjective JFYI.
Plus it depends on the synth. If you have to choose a static single-cycle wave (like the Evolver) then that is very different from being able to scan through a wavetable like you can with the Waldorf synths.

And in the modular world there are plenty of digital wavetable oscillators that are extremely flexible and unique sounding. The Synthesis Technology e350 Morphing Terrarium has a very smooth interpolation between waves and it sounds amazing. Then there is the Harvestman Piston Honda that allows you to load user wavetables.

Waldorf Blofeld can load single cycles as part of a user wavetable with latest firmware, so additional sampling option is not necessary for this.User single cycles can be non symmetrical.
how many ? 64 per wavetable x 38 user wavetables.

synth.stromeko.net/Downloads.html has user wavetables including single cycles from prophet VS waves & Ensoniq SQ80.

Thanks to Kotró László Lehel 's Wavetable creator Software you can import single cycle wavs or create them graphically.

there are some details of my findings making wavetables in this thread
