Works great!!! Time to install - 10 mins... Of which 3 were drilling holes and 5 removing the needed screws to disassemble. |

The instructions were spot on and designed to minimize likelihood of damage. It asked to use a 1/8" bit to make a pilot hole and then a 1/4" bit to make the final hole. Used my old dewalt drill.

haha. Sorry. I hooked it up to my MPC1000, MPC500 and MAudio Axiom keyboard. I primarily use a sans-computer setup centered around a MPC100 with JJOS on it. I was able to send midi data from all three and haven't tried to receive data from the Monotribe as yet. Sending midi notes over was exciting enough for me since i don't need to use that tiny onboard keyboard thing. My little project of the week is to make a track using only a battery operated setup - monotribe and mpc500 - without using my larger analog synths. Plan to only use monotribe samples on the mpc500. |

I just got my kit today andhave to say to all of you people sitting on the fence, just get one. It came very well packaged, the kit and cables are also well made, the PDF instructions are spot on, it's a quality product all round. It works just as i'd hoped, so many thanks to Raph who did an awesome job on these kits.

Well I got my kit in the post today, delivery to Australia was about 2 weeks time which was quicker than I expected for standard USPS. The kit was VERY well packed, so thanks for that Altitude. Installation was easy, although I don't regularly use a drill so I ended up making a couple of scratch marks near the drill-holes due to my lack of expertise but the marks don't bother me in the slightest and as you can see from nuthings post above, mark-free installation is absolutely possible. Here's an internal and external pic of the completed mod: ![]() ![]() To test I opened up Ableton, added the External Instrument plug to a track and starting firing MIDI clips at channel 1. It all worked perfectly first go! Same with playing notes from the Monotribe using the Novation Remote keyboard, it all just works. I haven't tested MIDI out from the Monotribe and probably never will, in fact I probably didn't even need to add the MIDI out port as I doubt I'll ever use it but who knows, it may come in handy some day. I also made a quick video of the Monotribe playing back MIDI clips from Ableton, nothing special musically, just a proof-of-concept: So yeah, anyone who wants to add MIDI to their Monotribe, I highly recommend this kit! If I can install it, anyone can. The Monotribe cost me AUS$189, the kit was US$55, all up less than $250 for an analogue synth with MIDI, freakin BARGAIN. |

I have also just installed this midi kit and want to add my praise to all of the above. It was well packaged and delivered quickly. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. It all went smoothly and worked first time. The price is very modest for the quality of the components and the simplicity of installing it. So yeah, i would reccomend it to anyone who wants to add midi to their monotribe, for me it was important. Thank you |

I don't know if anyone else has discovered this but i was very pleased to realise: If you sync your monotribe with a cv signal once a bar and then record notes via midi in flux mode you can get 8 bars/128 steps out of the monotribes internal sequencer. This works particularly well with an electribe, i can create an 8 bar loop on my esx playing the monotribe via midi then record the whole thing (using cv sync) onto the monotribe and free up a melody part on the esx for sonething else. I send the midi via my roland sh 32 which handily removes the midi clock from its thru port. It is an unexpected bonus! |

does this midi kit still work with the monotribe v2 firmware?

Yep, it works even better with v2 firmware as it now supports velocity.

As I said earlier in this thread, this midi kit is well worth the money so i'd recommend just buying one if you want midi with the monotribe. It has given this "toy-wonder" the opportunity for serious use now | |

Man, I am baffled by why they would be adding midi features (not that I am complaining). I have an original firmware and rev 2 box to compare and they definitely added features. I had a theory that velocity was already there and they just integrated it into a new feature but that is not the case at all.

Who knows, maybe one day they'll even assign a CC to the LFO, then my life will be complete. ![]() I still use it without MIDI for a laugh sometimes too, last night I made a cool sequence on the couch, then I grabbed my iPad, opened the DM-1 drum machine and connected it to the Monotribe via WIST (WIST was connected to the Monotribe via the iPhone) and then ran the drumbeat from DM-1 into the audio input on the Monotribe, so I had my cool sequence going with a crazy gated drumkit running through the filter as well. Too much fun! |

You're absolutely right, I meant to say VCF not LFO, I had a momentary brain-freeze. |

You can get a quasi cuttoff sweep by setting the lfo to vcf, one shot, and setting the intensity all the way up. Then you can modulate the cutoff via the mod wheel. I do it in the video Sent from my X10 using Gearslutz.com |

| What an incredible kit!
BUY THIS KIT! Hell, I recommend it even if you don't have a Monotribe. The logo on the circuit board is that cool. But seriously, great product, quickly shipped, well packed. The written instructions are very clear (though to be honest I found the photographs lacking) and the whole modification takes no longer than 15 minutes. Absolutely brilliant. Tested midi-in with a Novation SLMKII and it worked like a charm. Tested midi-out with the MKS7 and Holy F**K. Sequencing high-hat rolls into the 707 with the ribbon controller may be the most fun I've ever had. Assign the three modules of the MKS7 to send on MIDI channel one, and BOOM, you've got yourself a three DCO Roland Monosynth (with independent filters, choruses, PWM and detune on the bass voice. And that's before putting any of the modules into nasty JUNO unison mode) Oh my. There are a couple instances of glitchy behavior, but seeing I haven't done any trouble shooting, I'll try and suss out what is causing the issues before bringing them public in this forum. I'm fairly certain it just has to do with the plug and play midi-routing I patched together to test the unit. |

What additional pics/changes would you find useful in the manual?

The depth of field on the first photograph made it seem (to my eyes) that both boards were inside the monotribe when the midi jacks are installed (even though the manual literature states this is not the case). Also, a few of the photographs show your individual out mods. I deduced pretty quickly what was going on, but I can see how the extra, unexplained, capacitors in the picture might confuse somebody. One problem I haven't figured out yet: when the monotribe sequencer is stopped, I cannot change the pitch of any of the synths that I are synced to the midi-out jack of the monotribe. They register the note on/off value, but seems to retain the pitch information of the last note pressed on the monotribe's ribbon. To make matters more confusing, the midi controller I'm using is tracking the monotribe's vco correctly. (so I hear the the line I play correctly from the monotribe's output, but as a static note from the other modules.) I'm using a emagic Unitor8 for my midi routing. Any thoughts? |

Thats unfortunately a quirk with how the mt formats its midi data, it sends number of parameters with each note that are probably messing things up at the destination. Some devices are ok with it, some obviously not. What are you sending to? Sent from my X10 using Gearslutz.com |
