Smoothing out sharpness of drums?

I am using a Mackie 1640i mixer paired with a JoMoX & MachineDrum UW...

Typically (this has been my foremost problem for years), the drums sound too sharp. I want to smoothen them out, but then when I do that with compressors it just mucks everything up. It's incredibly frustrating.

I am slowly moving to a 100% OTB setup. I recently bought an RNLA compressor. Should I try just compressing the master bus? I do this in software to great effect, but OTB it might end up being a much more expensive option & may seem inefficient with a $250 compressor from RNC.

The JoMoX is a beast. Thuds. I need something to tame it... agh..

frustrating.

Probably the only way we're going to get a handle on what this issue is is if you post and example of this 'sharpness' you hear.

Kramer pie comp helps greatly. (waves) But the mic you choose and where you put it is king.

Adjust the attack times so there is less / no transient?

Filter or EQ the HF?

Turn the drums down?
