Hardware synth for that 90's sound (The Magnetic Fields)

I need some advice.

I want to buy a hardware synth and I'm pretty unsure of what I should look for because I know next to nothing about synths.

What type of synth should I get if I want sounds similar to those on "Holiday" by The Magnetic Fields?

I don't want to mimic that sound. But it is probably my all time favourite record featuring synths, and I wonder what type of synths could produce that sound.

Help much appreciated!

And yeah, here's two songs from the album for those of you who hasn't heard it.

The Magnetic Fields - Sugar World - YouTube
Take Ecstasy With Me - YouTube

gah... dude has a lot of stuff. Tons of semi-modulars too...

it's better not to think about it

Love that album. Odd you picked two non-synth heavy tracks.. but I guess the lead sounds aren't what your after tho..

Haha yeah I know I read an interview where he said that many of the drum hits on that album were made with hand drawn wave forms..

Semi modular you say? That sounds complicated. Haha, didn't give too much thought into the songs i picked but youre right!

Actually its less complicated... just as rare and expensive tho...

Edit: .. oh you were asking about drum sounds too? Pearl Syncussion is good way to cover most of that.

Cool I want something more portable I think. Do you think a cz101 would be cool for those types of sounds?

I have a sampler so I'm pretty set when it comes to percussion. I'm thinking of using the synth for bass/pads in a shoegazey band that im in.

Really? I thought Magnetic Fields, of that vintage at least, were famous for being low budget. What gear did they use on that album?

Anyway, Holiday is indeed a classic. Strange Powers is one of my all time favorite songs.
