Should I sell my Virus??

I own Omnisphere and Reason in the software field. I have been feeling like the sounds I get out my Virus are the same sounds I can get out my Motif and Omnisphere. Does anybody feel the same way? I make electro-ambient/downtempo-lounge music. I try digging in the Virus, but it seems I get the same type of sounds. I was thinking about selling it and just adding something more simple to my Motif XF and Omnisphere 1.5... like maybe a Tetra?? Anybody know what they would do if they were in my shoes?

Sounds like you have a nice digital assortment already, why not go for something analog (like a tetra).

Yeah, you're right, I think I should go for some beef. Is the Tetra good at pads?

Tetra pads

scroll down a bit for sound examples

IMO though, if pads are what you want, you need a (poly) evolver

I had somewhat the same experience. Between, omni, sylenth and zebra I decided to sell the virus.

Do you miss the Virus at all? Are there any sound limitations since you sold the Virus?

Yeah, the Virus is somewhat of a classic sound now, did you just get sick of it's "tone"?

Because it's not sample based (like the Motif and Omnisphere), you can get infinite variations of it's character.

I think I am tired of its tone. Seems like I did get tired of its tone. I feel like I get more variety with Omnisphere and the Motif. Listening to those Tetra pads made me feel like I should get that next!

theres quite a bit of software that sounds very similar to the virus, I say sell it and grab an analog synth, or pocket the cash.

i agree a lot of software can cover virus territory, but i'd still like to get one. I currently have no hardware synths now and really want a virus to just flip on and start programming without booting the pc. A virus ti and a Prophet 08 would make me super happy.

No not at all really..but that isn't entirely fair because I got my virus long after I had originally lusted for it (2004). Initially I fell for the virus C but ended up I bought a B just last year. I wanted to LOVE the polar, bc it is a stunning synth but when I played it a few times I didn't love it at all. I love what it is capable of but I don't love its filter. By the time I got the virus, software had caught up enough that what I used it for was easily enough replaced. I also found myself using far different sounds from my original intention which require primarily analog, electric keys and odds and ends like the omnichord & optigan. So there you have it, I don't miss it at all... though sometimes I still would like to have the original Redback I played in the store for nostalgic purposes.

I think the only thing I would miss is the hands on control you get with the Virus. As far as sounds go I think I'm content with the Motif and Omni combo. Most of the instruments I use are acoustic sounds anyway, a lot of the times I put effects on those acoustic sounds and I'm good.

You might as well. I really see no point in owning hardware synths anymore, it seems like it just complicate the workflow. A computer that is modern and powerful is a better weapon with softsynths then any hardware synth IMO. But if you have a shitty computer it's not any fun trying to fight the CPU, I can see how a synth would be beneficial

You obviously have never worked with hardware synths.

To my ears the Virus has more presence than its soft competition: fatter, thicker, deeper.

But everyone has different ears, so if you're a bit bored of the Virus sell it can get yourself a poly analogue. I would recommend a DCO from the 80's (one of the Roland Junos, or an Oberheim Matrix 6).

Or even go mono...Little Phatty?

There is sometimes the same sound with different synth. Virus is a VA like most of the other digital synth (soft and hardware) so it's no surprise that others can sound similar.
More difficult it's to program the same sound on different synth to get an idea about the difference.
I tried this with a typical unison sound which is a bit a "signature" sound also for the Virus.

One sound, recreated with virus, sylenth, dune, zebra (always some bars in this order). With more tuning they can more closer but I think it's enough to get the idea.

Then yes, I think for you particular situation, you're good with your Omni/Motif combo. Adding a Tetra to your setup (as you mentioned) would be a great idea.

Hey 2am, I'm just wondering did you end up selling your Virus after?. I'm thinking of selling mine too.

I recently bought a Virus.

Omnisphere is a different beast.

Much more useful presets right out fo the box on the Virus.

Sound engine can do much more than Omnisphere.

The Virus is an instrument and will hold some value. Sell Omnisphere.

Still have my Virus C and when I kind of get tired of it, I just let it sit for a month or two and when I go back to it, I find that I missed how it sounds.

If you are just over hardware in general that's one thing, but there is a lot more you can do with a virus than push keys
