Thread Starter | Do you use Vengeance samples? Got a question...
When you use a 1 shot kick from a Vengeance sample pack, do you generally use it by itself or do you layer it with another kick? Is the 1 kick sample usually enough? |

I would use it by itself generally. A very popular trick is layering a sine wave under it to get a bit fuller kick sound.

When creating kicks (whether they are Vengeance or any other), I usually layer 3 samples: 1. Sub-base for "Thump" 2. Low/mid for "Spank" 3. Mid/high for "Snap" I cut redundant/unnecessary frequencies on each layer as well. But IMO, whatever sounds good is good. Just trust your ears. -T |

| Lives for gear | I don't have any Vengeance samples but I do layer my kicks sometimes. I also like to layer snares, especially if I am working on a drum 'n' bass track. Also try layering kicks and hi hats together.

Cool, thanks guys. Got another question for you. Do you prefer to use a MIDI sequencer or do you like to just drag your samples in the arrange? |

i created sample instruments of just kicks using EXS sampler and also kontakt. very easy to do and gives more life to your samples. but ill drag and drop as well. depends. even make my own kits. i created a kick sample instrument patch using exs and i layer a lot of kicks. or maybe one. ill find low end sound kick, more snappy and mid rangy.. | |

I was just wondering the same. I found that I like the workflow of drum racks for programming the rhythms in, but as far as working with the sounds and affecting them, it seems like dropping the samples onto channels is easier, without having to navigate through the drum rack. could be just that i'm not completely accustomed to the plugin tho. be interested to see what others do

Most of my drums go in racks though any type of longer fx samples I just drop on the timeline. Love Vengeance kits. Layer them every single day. Sent from my PC36100 using Gearslutz.com App

I hardly layer kicks. I usually use just the right one. Sometimes that means I have to go through hundreds of samples. Then good equalising and the oumph is there. I play almost all drums and percussions with Battery. That gives me the ability to swap single samples very fast, e.g. if I shouldn't like the kick any longer. And it's way easier and faster to program variations and fills with MIDI than with audio samples. |
