Can't hear the difference with and without interface

Hey guys !

I would want to buy a sound interface but i'm wondering what difference can you hear in your mixdowns with and without sound interface. My friend let me mix my track on hes MOTU MK3 hybrid but i don't feel any difference in the sound quality. I know latency is lower, pre-amps are better but what about sound quality, can someone give me more informations about that ?

Thanks !

You should hear a lot more detail with a good interface which makes it easier to make subtle eq / compresssion judgements. Try listening with headphones - its possible that your friend's room isn't great which is why you aren't hearing much of a difference. It REALLY is worth getting an audio interface if you want to mix properly.

In relation to a random on-board cheap Creative Labs (or equivalent) interface, a dedicated interface makes less noise and jitter in its converter(s). And, like you already stated, the latency is usually WAY lower because of fancy ASIO drivers.

Given that you're mixing ITB, I don't see how pre-amp quality would be relevant.

Try listening to a commercial pop song through an on-board interface and the MOTU alternately, through the same set of speakers/headphones. If you still can't hear any difference, don't waste your money.

One thing to always keep in mind about pro audio:

You might not hear a difference, but someone else, under the right conditions might.

I used to let all my tracks clip because I couldn't hear any of the clipping. But then one day one dude told me he could hear clipping in almost all of my tracks and he was really disappointed and annoyed by it.

Ever since then I stopped allowing my tracks to clip, even if I can't hear it.

See what I mean?

Yeah right. Systems are different for each people. Something may sound good with mine, not with another one. Good sound interface and speakers are necessary to make tracks sound good on every system.

I'll make another try with a good headphone. Maybe his system is crapy.
