National Geographic Style overview of EDM genres

I hope this question doesn't piss anyone off. I am 100% positive that all the info is scattered across the internet, and within GS. However, it is not all in one nice place.

And for those people who otherwise find this post a rehash -- feel free to have fun with it. Here goes:

Let's make a list of every EDM genre we can think of, and give either a serious description of what defines it, differentiates it, or a poke of fun at it if you feel inclined. Feel free to include specific artists/songs that in your mind epitomize the genre, or go out on a limb and tell us about which artist/song that is currently considered ____ is not really suited to that label.

This is a thread of boxes and putting everything in its place.

The descriptions obviously are very much tongue in check but overall it's a more then decent overview of the development of edm and the connections betweens it's subgenres.

no its not..its all wrong and bullshit...the inter relations and timelines are pure phantasy, as most of the genres...

its all a joke.. there never was a genre of stupid house or gloom core or banging techno..

thats the work of people that never have seen a club from the inside and no the 90´s just from story from their parents.

when journalists wouldnt take this a serious source it would be really funny... but so its just sad

The author of that guide makes it pretty clear that those genres don't actually exist/make sense? Did you even read the descriptions of gloomcore or banging techno? It's a pisstake on all those genrenames that are made up all the time.

I stand by my point that the main genres and their connections are correct overall. Obviously not every influence can be described in such an overview. Feel free too disagree tho.

the amount of false info let apear some correct connections or placements along the timeline rather random.. Beside the timeline stops ten years ago.

Sorry this thing is all wrong. better take it from the net

Well the ishkur guide isn't very acurate in its descriptions but as an introduction to genres is quite good, the music selection is pretty good representation of the genres.

Also, its obviously not made with academic precision in mind, more for the fun of it and to share his opinions and knowledge.

For me at last makes me LOL.

And simply there isnt something similar out there that covers so much genres.

Well you still haven't offered your site. Nor have you even offered a link to somebody elses site. You haven't contributed anything at all except your constant stream of Negative Nancy style inane comments and questions. Hurry along now you don't want to miss the bus to Troll City Center.

I contributed a warning about false information.. thats is more valuable that just flaming around as you do. Have you provided any links? Are you serious one should use this ishkur guide? Than say so..

You avoid any statements just asking others to give input. And you seem to be a victim of this ishtur bullshit..

Let me guess..your music is quite like that..avoiding own ideas?

Besides the Op asks for genres..and i say make up some yourself..thats enough said about the genre bullshit..

When he would ask about the hystory i might now some links.. but to give house music even more stupid names? you can fill a book with english pseudo hype genres during the last 10 years alone.. but you dont find a single word regarding them in theese ishtur guy.. but 20 sub genres of goa... quite funny for a music that sounds all the same since 15 years...

There's only two kinds of EDM.

Good house music and bad house music.

What all other sites lack are audio demos so you can draw your own conclusion where stuff fits. That alone gives a better frame of reference than a bunch of descriptions.

Yes, it stops at several years ago. It hasn't been updated in the meantime.

Wikipedia is even worse, because genres are trivial - so you get into constant edit wars, bickering about what goes where. Or stuff like Yorkshire Bleeps and Bass - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - that redirects to the general Techno article and misses any kind of reference in that part. The word "Yorkshire" doesn't even appear.

So if you're making stuff up out of whole cloth anyway, I'd rather see just one person do it - with illustrations.

Until you have something that's objectively better - and that means including demos and not allowing color-of-the-bikeshed folks to add in their own nonsense, Ishkur's guide, tongue in cheek though it is (it gives a giant DISCLAIMER button), is better as a reference than anything else.

Certainly better than complaining that the information is wrong and not doing anything about it.

Allmusic.com is worth looking at. They have quite detailed descriptions of all kinds of sub-genres.

I did see this before posting, but it didn't give me the info I wanted. It seemed to be written by academics studying EDM, whereas the perspective I want is to hear how people who make the stuff view it.
