I find reading magazines a great source of inspiration. I currently buy musictech, future music, computer music & sound on sound.

In terms of value i think they all pay for each other, with SOS featuring a lot more in depth features, not to mention many more pages per issue, whereas the others are a mixture of DVD content & a few good tips here & there.

The standard Musictech issues i would definitely describe as being more suited for the beginner (that's not to say there's nothing for the pro) & definitely feature the most ad content. The focus issues afaik feature articles pulled mostly from the magazine, so it's not entirely new content, so more useful to those who just want to learn about a specific subject & don't subscribe. The print quality is worth mentioning, as it's MUCH better!

Hope that helps

Picked up the mastering and LP 9 vol. II for $1.00 each with DVD's at half price books locally this week!!!!

Also www.macprovideos.com is really even a better deal then spending list price $20-30 on the special issue. Check with your news agent, they may sell it at a lower price rather than return it when it's pulled.

The special issues I've seen from both MusicTech and ComputerMusic mainly reprint articles that were previously published in the regular mags.
